If you haven’t heard of Private Video, you must be limiting yourself to hotel porn, since the shelves of any sex shop are full of their DVDs. What's more impressive is that everything I've seen from Private has been exemplary. They get the best talent from the newly admitted EU countries, with Czech and Hungarian women who look more like Armani models than porn stars, and guys like Olympic swimmers. Their location budget for one film could easily bankroll at least three Jill Kelly productions.

Let’s face it, Private is as pro as it gets; you’ll find no handheld cameras or bad lighting here. Surprisingly decadent and very raunchy, you’re not just the guy getting a two-girl blowjob; you’re the guy on his luxury yacht in the Mediterranean getting a two girl blowjob while another girl fucks herself with a glass dildo in front of you. All this with really decent acting, edgy styling, and absurdly beautiful women.

Another thing to point out is that, while not sacrificing the action in the slightest, Private is unusually female-accessible -- thematic content, elaborate set design, exotic, breathtaking locations, and a discerning eye for costume, hair, and makeup. Also, the actresses are not humiliated or laughed at by any dumb-guy antics, which so much porn suffers from. Private reminds us that splashing a load onto a girl’s face does not need to be a humiliating gesture; it’s just sex. Their films are less male centered in only the subtlest way, so that your average wanker will be none the wiser.

The reason for the big Private windup is that I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this month’s Private releases. Nothing introduces this collection better than the limited edition 4-DVD The Best of Susi Medusa (Pirate Fetish Machine).


A stripper in white leather dances to some clangy techno, then fucks three bikers in the opening scene on the first disc (The Wild Circle). Leather, chains, fire, and lipstick are the signature elements here, and so are submissive women and criminal dealings. The entire film scripts in sex for ulterior motives and maintains the leather and fishnets aesthetic throughout.

What grabbed me most of all was the clever intermingling of criminal fantasy with hard porn. Someone gets shot with a tranquilizer gun in one of the scenes, and Jessica Fiorentino gets forced into the back of an SUV after a convincing struggle with two men in another. This rough physical stuff establishes the tone for the aggressive sex, often two or more men on one girl and always brutal ass-fucking. The fetish element is made to seem very appropriate, which makes it very accessible and palatable.

The costumes are also first class. There’s no cheap sex-shop leather here: only designer gear, down to the platform victim boots. Susi Medusa Gottardi (director) has enough experience to know what works both in terms of aesthetic and action. We are spared the whipping scenes with oversized falls gently slapping cellulite to redness and badly acted subservience. Instead, we get an angry Czech girl in stilettos (Sandi Style) stomping on a guy’s ass and quads, or Jessica Fiorentino knocking out her plaything after she gets bored of finger-fucking her. Wow! Finally we have a fetish style film that has some surprises.

In another scene a girl in an officer’s hat (Tina) smokes elegantly and exhales onto another girl’s pussy (Lucy Lee) while she plays with it. The action is set in an aristocratic room ornately decorated in authentic Louis XIV opulence. A guy watches the spectacle and the scene quickly and seamlessly takes off into a very raunchy fuck-fest. It's all beautiful in a Gothic sort of way; very Andrew Blake on amphetamines.

In fact, the whole film is surprisingly watchable without a remote. The disparate elements are interwoven expertly and there is a marked absence of cliché, disingenuous portrayal, or monotony. The rhythm of edits also works to allure the viewer. When all of this is carried by a wealth of originality, the kind you never see in this genre of porn, the result is simply masterful. It’s like an edgier and more expert version of Michael Ninn Sex. Impressive indeed.

The next film, Trust No One starts in a stone villa in Rome, where a guy says the word ‘bitch’ one too many times while getting his dick sucked. We move into the den full of rustic Italian artifacts where a boar’s head hangs opposite the fireplace. Women run the show in this one; enjoy.

Disc three is the Theatre of Lust. In the opening scene, the hooker (Julie Silver) waits until the money is given to her pimp; she then descends downstairs where you expect the john to follow her.
