Men are from Mars.................

okay, for the first time in 5,000 years Mars will be at its closest orbit to earth throughout the month of August. on August 27th, it will be at its closest and will be approximately the same size as the moon.

it won't happen again for a while - so mark your calendars - and make sure your kids take a moment to look. this is a moment that will not come again in our lifetime.

god, i'm so psyched...........

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

I hope, hope, hope I can get a good picture of it! I LOVE the night sky.

Not all who wander are lost.

Last ime I got to see MArs so close was 2 years ago while camping in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. the first two nights I slept alone outside "her" tent - It was something to watch Mars roll through the sky, low on the the horizon with all those stars up there behind it.
God, I wish I could get back there to see the glory of us in the universe again. One day....

This has been circulating on the web for a bit. Unfortunately the science behind it is all wrong. According to the Abrams Sky Calendar, a great subscription for $12 btw, Mars is "faint at mag. +1.8, is already hard to spot as month begins, very low, 10 degrees north of west in mid twilight, and becomes more difficult as it sets earlier in ever brighter twilight"

Since Mars is lined up near the Sun it is on the far side of the Sun relative to the Earth and very small.

At it's near approach a couple of years ago it might have looked as big as a full moon but only through a medium power telescope.

Sorry to burst the bubble but I'm pretty sure the source you had is wrong.

Far from an expert, but I follow the sky fairly consistantly.
