A Thought From My Father

My father died a long time ago in 1973. He was a good man who had worked his way from digging coal as a teenager to being an army officer. He was not perfect, and had his faults, but offsetting all of them was that he was kind-hearted and generous, and maybe through commanding men in action during World War II had a way in letting all those near and dear to him know how much he believed in them. He was also a fine horseman and had a wonderful way with all animals.

Even though he died a long time ago he has been an inspiration to me throughout my adult life. Ironically I only ever went down to the pub with him once and had a genuine man to man conversation with him (rather than a father-son one) and that was the day before he died. There is no point in feeling cheated, although for a long time that was my sentiment.

I didn't quite know what to write for Father's Day, until MOfunNOWWOW wrote It about favourite quotations ....... and among all those quotations was one my dad used to always say and write, and I want to share it with you:

Any good thought I can have,
Any good word I can say,
Any good deed I can do,
Let me do it now.

For I will not pass this way again.

Thanks dad. You were a great man and you have always been with me on my journey through life.

Thanks for sharing that.
How lucky, you DID get to have that last talk.
I never did.

Isn't it strange? For years I considered to have had only one man to man conversation with my father to have been short-changed. Now of course I realise that it was a gift that I should be thankful for. How things change simply by the perspective we place on them. Thanks for endorsing my shift in view.

yes, now - be present in the moment - do it now

don't wait to tell someone they matter, or stop for a moment and sink your toes into the grass, or drink a glass of wine with a huge strawberry in it, or .........

well, just don't wait - do it

thanks, this hit me where it counts

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

I have always been struck by the last line, "For I will not pass this way again." Lost moments, lost opportunities are gone, which makes the present so important.
