The Scourge Of God

Pet peeve #119: I really hate it (see exceptions below) when women (and in my experience so far, it's always been women) call me "hon" or "darlin'" or other such things when I am clearly not their "hon" or "darlin'" or whatever. Whether it's a waitress or (this is a prime example) the receptionist at my vet's office or anyone else, just don't, okay?

1. If we wake up next to each other at least a couple of times per week, names like that are perfectly okay, and sometimes even desirable.

2. If you're using it as a literary device, to make a point, to be sarcastic, for mutual (or even just your own) amusement, that's also fine, and also desirable in cases. (For example, a reply to this blog entry that made extensive and creative use of such terms would be not just okay but funny as hell. I would probably laugh my ass off, and then it would be really uncomfortable for me to sit down, because I wouldn't have an ass any more. I digress. Again.)

Otherwise, skip it. I know they don't mean anything by it, but that's the point, or at least part of the point. If you say stuff like that when it doesn't mean anything, it cheapens those terms for people who are trying to use them to mean something. So, to the receptionist at the vet and everyone else whom it may concern, unless I'm your hon, don't call me your hon.

It's possible, of course, that I've misunderstood in some cases, and maybe they were really calling me a Hun. But do I look like Attila, a.k.a. The Scourge Of God? Yeah, I didn't think so either. Nice nickname, though.
