Some Time Ago

Some time ago I met you.
I warmed to your humour,
Smiled at your smile:
Some time ago.

Some time ago I liked you.
I listened to your wisdom,
Nodded at your words:
Some time ago.

Some time ago I fancied you.
I saw your broad shoulders,
Liked your trim waist:
Some time ago.

Some time ago I loved you.
I laughed with you happy,
Cried at your sadness:
Some time ago.

Some time ago I missed you.
I longed for your greeting,
Waited for your call:
Some time ago.

Some time ago I lost you.
I glanced at your picture,
Resigned to your absence:
Some time ago.

Sometimes I still think of you.
Longing to talk with you,
Wanting your smile.
Sometimes I still do.

Sometimes I can’t bear it:
Lacking your friendship,
Living without you.
Sometimes I just can’t.

Polly...beautiful...sad...and written from the heart! Your words ring true for so many. And the sadness never goes away from a love lost...or a friend. Thank you for sharing this! I'm going to go read it again now. ~hugz~

This persistent repetition creates a deeply painful feeling
of loss and longing. I wish you were free from it.

Polly --

You latest post has once again unearthed an intense emotion; how do we cope with the love that is lost?

One of my very favorite jazz lyrics is, I believe, a good accompaniment to your verse.

Where Do You Start?

Where Do You Start?
How do you separate the present from the past?
How do you deal with all the things you thought would last? That didn't last.
With bits of memories scattered here and there,
I look around and don't know where to start.

Which books are yours?
Which tapes and dreams belong to you and which are mine?
Our lives are tangled like the branches of a vine, that intertwine.
So many habits that we'll have to break.
And yesterdays we'll have to take apart.

One day there'll be a song or something in the air again,
To catch me by surprise and you'll be there again,
A moment in what might have been.

Where do you start?
Do you allow yourself a little time to cry?
Or do you close your eyes & kiss it all goodbye?
I guess you try.
And though I don't know where & don't know when,
I'll find myself in love again.
I promise there will always be,
A little place no one will see,
A tiny part within my heart,
That stays in love,
With you.

Having a great love and losing a great love brings both joy and sorrow in varying degrees. Having a great love and not losing it, well . . . at least in my dreams.

Bittersweet memories, Dear.

I think that saying is true. "Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" The pleasure...the pain...helps us know we are alive...capable of love and still learning the many dimensions of love. We can all relate. Thank you for sharing.

How lovely of you to dig this one out of the basement! I'd forgotten I ever wrote it. Care to share what motivated you, Keith?

Well, as part of my reorientation into BlogLand I have decided to respond to those bloggers who are welcoming me back by visiting the basement of each of them.

I'm weird like that...
