Not Fantasy: Hyperreality

There is DECEPTION; there is FANTASY; there is the FANTASY GAP; there is HYPERREALITY.

DECEPTION and intentional FANTASY are easy to understand. DECEPTION deliberately pretends to be the truth. Fantasy announces that it is not the truthFANTASY.

Some people make fantasies about me without me lying (eg I’m not a 35 year old Asian Blonde Lovely). Equally I can unwittingly put fantasies on other people. (eg I’ve always wanted a handsome guy from St John to sail around the world in pursuit of me and I really and truly believe that expatbrit49 is polishing up his boat and trimming his sails at this very moment.) These are examples of the FANTASY GAP, not examples of hypocrisy or deception.

In Blogville we also find the creation of new realities: ones which are real, but not part of real life. freelove999 said, “I can let my different personas have free rein.” Similarly, I have been able to give Polly a lot of rope. This adult site allows Polly the safety she needs. No wonder Polly and FreeLove are good friends. I’m sure Waggy will soon be finding the space she needs around here as well. When one aspect of my character connects with one aspect of FreeLove’s personality, sparks fly for me. A new reality is born that goes beyond imagination and I experience a real high.

Similarly, other aspects of my character connect with aspects of other friends here. None of us have to deal with the RL shit of being neighbours or colleagues: we can focus on what we find exciting in each other. I nearly called this the “fantasy connection,” but it is not fantasy; it is more real than fantasy. It sometimes seems more real than reality. So I will call it the HYPERREALITY of Blogville.

Hyperreality: I think it involves focusing on tiny bits of reality at a time. They go under a soft spotlight, and become intensified: more real than real.

I find it incredibly exciting; I intend to continue exploring it.

This is Polly, still Wagging

Wow, Polly, this is a really thought-provoking post! I think I have experienced self-deception, by trying to turn a fantasy into a reality, I have certainly been deceived by men on here who I had fantasises about and who turned out to be very different in the flesh. I have a fantasy "gap" between what my real life is at the moment and what I would wish it to be, but I am not sure that I can really be me on this site, because I realise, that like in Real Life, I am judged by my words here, maybe even judged more harshly here that I would be in real life, because after all, I only have my words and some carefully selected images to communicate emotions and meaning.

What I am getting greater understanding is that the mistakes I make in perceiving others are also mistakes that people make about me, the assumptions, the bits of information that the mind "fills in". The strength of my fantasy of passion for a person who communicated to me by just words and images and the communication of that fantasy to him and his subsequent response to that scares me. The aftermath of that I am still dealing with because it appears as though my experience was unique and I was undergoing an unusual stimulus as a result of joining this site. It shows just how powerful this method of communication can be, but it also conveys its shortcomings. But then again, perhaps I am deceiving myself once again.

Yes, there is a kind of cathartic element to blogging on here, but my persona on here is much like my persona in real life. I don't find greater acceptance or approval here, but perhaps I am wrong. I am not sure about being in hyper-reality, isn't this just a fancy word for fantasy? Perhaps I don't just get it yet! I wish I understood more of this.

As we were driving to our retreat this past weekend there was a report on blogging. They gave some amazing numbers of how many people are now many people start blogging every week. It certainly is quite the phenomena and perhaps has the potential of creating a new kind of communication. I remember FreeLove talking about the potential of creating new ways of being.

I just posted a related post on the subject where I talked about all the ways that this internet communication fails to give us the cues we normally look for. We are forced to make decisions without the regular input we get from face to face meetings. This certainly is the negative side of the coin. I wonder if what you are talking about, Polly, will someday be seen as the positive....being able to push aside a bunch of information that is not critical and get right to the stuff that is important at the moment.

Very interesting.....I hope FreeLove is listening.

wow! i am flattered...!

blogland is not much of a hyperreality for me at the moment tho. in truth i am a bit bored. the hyperreality i need to focus on now is the hyperreality of getting lots of attention for my book, our publishing concern, and the book launch. it's hyper-reality in that the practical aspects are soooo real, but there is a massive element of fantasy --> fantasizing success --> around that at the moment.

I try to be myself on here but whether I'm more of myself then I am in the real world I haven't quite worked out yet....I think it allows me the freedom to explore wonder in a safe environment...

Waggy, I find your analysis deep and far-reaching.
Certainly the term HYPER-REALITY is very appropriate
to describe the phenomena you mention. Aspects of
my character have resonated with aspects of your
character. I do not need to fantasize. I know I
do not have a boat. And this is all fairly good.

Yes, I see what you are getting at, Polly and I totally agree, we would not go on, but judging my the comments left on the blog of a man who has quite a large harem of horny women following him, you'd think he would shag them all on meeting them! Unfortunately, I made the mistake of not having "good sense" way before I got blogging! It is just a painful price to pay, even know and I wonder when it is going to finish!

Hyperreality is a very interesting idea concept waggy. I wonder if it connects here with hyped reality? A truly thought-provoking post.

I hadn't thought of the connection, Warm, but yet I think Hyperreality does get over-hyped at times.
But I'm lucky with the friends I'm making on here. I'm discovering that many of us are a part of Real Life too.
I wonder if you are? I sense strongly you are.
