BlogVille Isn't Real

I'm a step further towards developing my theory of the unreality-superreality of Blogville. None of my best friends among the bloggers have ever talked with me face to face, so none of them really know who I am. Occasionally someone I chat with is shocked to learn that I'm not as they've imagined me (but I never claimed to be 30, or blonde, or Asian, or ... sexy?) Seriously, anacortes corresponded with me for weeks imagining that I was a 30-something Asian girl; that wasn’t what my profile said. Then there was this (presented with permission from BOSSIERBOY) :

BB: Got the pic and wanted to say hi. You look absolutely nothing like your breasts. Who would have thought.

WP: It is not possible for me to not look like my breasts. I am my
breasts; my breasts are me. Without them I would be different. With them I look like who I am.

BB: Not to be obscene, but your breasts look not more than 35, you look almost the age you said you are.

WP: What you mean is that I don't look anything like the fantasy you attached to the photo of my breasts. This is probably right. There are probably another hundred fantasies out there that also don't look like me.

BB: Well, I didn't think of my mental image of you as a fantasy, but I guess it is. Was.

WP: In other words you thought I was lying about my age. I wasn’t. Herrrumph.

. . . And we are still friends.

I’m among the many who have experienced a face-to-face meeting someone who was quite other than what they'd advertised. (Try skin color, race, continent of residence, age, marital status). Well, he did get his sex right.

Blogville isn't real.

But I love it anyhow.

This is Polly, still Wagging

Oh, Waggy, I beg to differ. Blogville IS real. The people that made it what it is are all real. I'm real. You're real. Now, with that said, yes, fantasies run rampant here, and people will tend to let fantasy overtake reality in an atmosphere such as this. Especially when someone's picture only shows a small piece of who or what they are, imaginations run amuck. But that's what makes this place fun. Where would we be without fantasies, or imagination? Bored silly, I would venture to guess.

Oh, and I have to agree with Bossier (yes, believe it or not lol ) - your breasts ARE very young in appearance.

Polly...what a fabulous post! This is very true....Blogville isn't real. But what happens here sometime is. And the friends that some of us are blessed to make here are! Many thanks to you and Bossierboy for sharing that IM. The fact is that you are a fabulous woman......with great breasts! And any man would be lucky to meet you. And I feel blessed to call you a friend.

If blogville is not real then why have I met so many local bloggers in person?

well I had to go look at your profile pic and see your breast for myself in order to comment. Your profile says your 60...your breast what you could see, gave me no indication that you wouldn't be 60...but thats just me. I just call it as I see it, I try not to let my imagination get away with me to much before I've auctally seen the person on cam, and I won't meet anyone without doing that first!

Indeed, people here live mostly in an electronically induced
fantasy. However, that fantasy is imagined by the real them.

Hi Polly,

Perhaps the cyber reality of Blogville doesn’t exist physically, but there are at least a few here who are what they portray to be and some are just as fictitious I’m sure in their everyday lives as they are here. The two I’ve met from here face to face were not who or what they claimed to be but that’s their problem. People are still people.

Several years ago there was a woman who answered phones where my wife worked and did she ever have a SEXY, SEXY voice and flirtatious behavior on the phone, but when I met her and her husband in person any fantasies about her disintegrated at the speed of light with the way she sniped at him. Fantasy vs. Reality.

Are you and your breasts all 60? I assumed because you said so it WAS so. Your breasts (what can be seen) look as good as others claiming to be much younger. Your intellect, sensitivity and class all paint you as a sexy and gracious lady whether you claim to be or not. Is that reality or my fantasy? Only you can answer that. My hope is that it’s real.

I have pretty good instincts when it comes to real vs. fake. Oh I've been fooled, but not often. I have a recipie for success:

Email each other for awhile, (You can gauge intelligence and ability to communicate). Sometimes I've done this for as long as a month.

Talk on the he charismatic? confrontational? Kind? Ask him about his siblings and parents. (Lot's of stuff here)

Meet him. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not sure whether 'being real' is the issue. I think you are right - we tend to use our imagination to fill in the blanks about things we don't know, often without realizing it.

Although I do not put a face pic on my profile, I try to supply one within one of the very first communications I have with someone, and request the same. This is not just if dating is the intention, but even for online friendships.

Webcams help this as well.

Interesting post and responses!

I read everyone's comments and just want to add - this is new territory. We are going somewhere that humans have never been before. The cyber world is being invented right now.

Yes, it is exciting to be on the frontier of this.

I assume you welcoming cross-commenting, lol, so I want to address what BigGirlzRSweet just said. I get exactly where she's coming from and find myself doing the same thing, age-wise. It doesn't matter so much with friendships, but when there is a potential non-platonic interest, I find myself stressing "I AM in my fifties - do you fully realize that?" I'm at the point now where I can pretty much tell when they're not really listening to what I'm trying to say.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]
