I am Attracted to Powerful Places

Driving home today from my latest backpacking trip, I realized something very important. I am attracted to "powerful places". Those are the places that intimidate me and place me in awe.

Last evening, I had several hours between the time I set up camp, which was located about 2,000 feet above a lake and below a peak that was nearly the same distance above. I could not concentrate, could not do anything other than look, listen and contemplate...360 degrees, over and over again.

I try to sell myself as a photographer that enjoys the simple beauties. A small creek with rippling waters. It is worth about a about a ten minute "sit and stare" to enjoy all of the sensory benefits of such a scene. Last night, it was nearly three hours.

You can see it in the places I have worked...Crater Lake, the Redwoods (I was especially taken in by the rugged Northern California coast) and now Mount St. Helens. Clearly, only the most powerful places will hold my attention.

One of my favorite places is Bryce Canyon. I felt inspired there, my Spirit soared in the space and colours of the rocks...a truly awesome place.

i understand that feeling...

the overwhelming majesty of mother nature in her splendor..

i will never tire of looking at Mt Robson.. and there is a voice that calls me to see Denali (Mt. McKinley)

the power of a storm can render me speechless...

it is good to be humbled..

You are so fortunate Volcano...to work in sorroundings that forces one to appreciate nature's beauty...in the city away from it...we can get so sidetracked and neglect to ponder and contemplate about life...it is true that such beauty that mother nature provides enduces one to contemplate...perfect setting...
