Who Are You Not To Be?

Who Are You Not To Be?

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

(Nelson Mandela as part of his Inauguration Speech in 1994.)

As the page showed up and I read the first lines I knew I had read the words before and they resonated with me then too.

Because I think it is the truth.

We aren't afraid to fail as much as we are to succeed. Too many of us are not used to success (sometimes certain areas of our lives we have more hangups over) and we can't visualise it, don't know what to do with it; so we unconsciously sabatage our efforts.

With success comes power and then comes the responsibility of wielding it wisely and living with the consequences...I think the responsibility is what we are unconsciously running from...it's easier to lie to ourselves and convince ourselves that we are as powerless as we claim.

And yet the human pysche is designed for self-survival...we don't really want other people to have more power than we do and see it used against us and our own best interests. So first instinct tends to be to beat them down, too.

I am headed to the tanning bed.. My body is shining now with the bronzers and tingle I have so slowly and enticingly caressed my body with. Soon I will have such a glow.

Wait.. I think I missed the point here.

I am not dead yet

So are you saying it is OKAY to be "on the list"??

But seriously Trav....

Those are indeed VERY POWERFUL WORDS!!!

I admit to by default or intention to trying to "blend into the crowd and not stand out" for a good part of my life...

but I have come to a realization in my life that is okay to stand out... to be different.. to go after what you want.. to ACHIEVE what you want.. to be successful (how ever we each define that).. and that by doing so we do indeed create opportunities and examples for others to do the same!!

Without someone standing out.. being different.. being the dreaded "competitive" word.. mankind would not progress.. evolve.. solve problems.. improve others lives.. make the world a little bit better place!!!

You can like me or not... praise me or ridicule me... you can call me friend or foe... you can join me or shun me...

Those are all your choices and decisions

But I KNOW I am helping some

And with that little piece of knowledge I can find solace and strength in the face of adversity....

And so do you my Friend!!

Let yourself SHINE a glow that illuminates the world (or at least your piece of it!).... set aside your fear for today and GO AFTER WHAT YOU WANT AND NEED!!

Know that the world WILL BENEFIT from your presence and shining in it!!!

Very well said, Trav! HBowt2 gave me the idea to send this to my daughter also. She's a college senior, doing well and with the whole world and her whole life in front of her. She is researching grad schools now to see where she might like to go for post-graduate work. This encouragment will help her right now! Thanks for the post!

    Quoting newaroundhere64:
    Enlightened words to aspire to.

Yes, Nelson Mandala used it in his inauguration speech, yet the words were originally written by Marianne Williamson in her book, "A Return To Love" c1992.

A great book, a great quote, a great world we would live in if one more person lived these words from the inside out.

The greatest arrogance is believing you're anything less than the whole and perfect being God created.

A return to love is and Excelllent book if you are struggling with your place in this worls and the one beyond that!

The opposite of LOVE is FEAR!

Sometimes an unexpected line can touch the quick of me deeper and more tenderly than spoken words. Thanks for speaking to me without knowing it.

Now if I can only take some of your courage and face my upcoming cross-country move without the semi-crippling fear I tend to suffer. And never mind the panic attacks that come every time I think of my father-in-law!

Thanks for shining on all of us....
You have brightened the lives of many more than you realize....
like I said I feel priviledged to be able to wake up in the mornings and read your words.... funny nonsensical... serious and deeply heartfelt... concerned and enlightened.. and wishing to share all that you have in your heart..... ................................
.. and of course your goofy side ... that makes me laugh until I cry.
I very adeptly will side step the crude and egoswelling parodies, <smirks>
I know it is only my own feelings but Mr Mandela was ahead of his time, but you ... well... we have you here for now and I think we all want you to keep on being a beacon that does shines so very very brightly.
