Methinks 5er Has Some 'Splaining To Do!

I was just over at 5er, the S'TD whipped wusses blog, and found the post Why are some people ass hats. All was well and good, until, while perusing the comment aisles I noticed THIS MAN

five_speed said the following..."did you know the modern IUD was derived from the practice of placing fig pits into the uterus of female camels to prevent pregnancy during long caravans?"

Do tell, my dear friend, how you know this to be true?

Your Shocked Beyond Words Friend,

Travelling, my dear shocked friend, I am a walking repository for unconnected tidbits of knowledge and jokes. I can never recall the knowledge or jokes on demand, but I am often reminded of things byt he events or conversation I am having at any given moment.

The tid bit with the IUD was one of those facts that I forgot I knew until we started talking about camel fuckers.

I picked that information out of a college biology book I stole from one of my mothers friends in 1985 or 86. It was in the chapter that discussed human reproduction. I can't remember the publisher/title/authors... I was only 11 or 12 when I read it... I can only remember it was a HUGE heavy college biology book.

The Intrauterine Device

The modern Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a 20th century development. In 1902, German physician Carl Hollweg developed a contraceptive pessary that extended into the uterus. Dr. Hollweg’s product was marketed for self-insertion, however, allegedly resulting in high risk of infection.
In 1909, another German doctor, Richard Richter, described the first true IUD. The device consisted of two coarse strands of silkworm gut wound into a ring shape and capped with celluloid. Although Dr. Richter described a technique for insertion and management of complications, he made no mention of efficacy, expulsion rate, or number of women fitted with the device—possibly to avoid prosecution under strict German laws prohibiting birth control. Richter’s IUD was largely ignored.

Twenty years after Richter’s two-page report was published, another German physician described success with a ring IUD. In 1929, Ernst Grafenberg became the first to report the clinical performance of an IUD—a 3% pregnancy rate among 1,100 women using his ring of silk structure. The following year, Dr. Grafenberg reported an even lower pregnancy rate (1.6 among 600 women using an improved ring wrapped in silver wire.

FYI - he's not whipped. Not even remotely close. I don't know how I overlooked all this when I first commented this morning...
