HEY! Watch the nuts!

This weekend the sun was shining and I was able to spend some quality time with my kids. So we headed outside with the ball and bat, all four of us. There is nothing like having your youngest son try his hardest to peg dad in the nuts from 5 feet away. Nope, there is nothing like it. Nor is there anything like the feeling when you nail your middle son in the head with the ball when he is attempting to switch hit because “switch hitters make the big bucks.”

So there I am, pitching with one ball while blocking my own with the other. One kid hanging off my leg, the other wanting to beat me with the bat and my daughter swearing up and down sliding into second base in a dress is ladylike. FFS… I don’t care that your pubic bone showing is the “in” thing, pull that skirt up. Sheeeeesh…. Wanna be teenagers!

Did you know you can’t sell them on Ebay? Nope, the feds show up at your house and everything. DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME! All in all it was a good weekend. An attempt at a new normal was made and was pretty much successful. Sort of. Whatever normal is for a wanna be teenager and two boys that think whoever draws Dad’s blood first is king of the hill. Which is fine by me. That’s just where I want them. My boys are monsters, terrors, tough but compassionate… everything most little boys should be. They have Dad’s blessing that is for sure. They are perfect just how they are. I wouldn’t change a thing. Daughter is too cool for her skirts but still slips into Daddy’s lap. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Several month’s ago I wrote this after spending several hours with them. This was a tough time for me and I think it reflects well what they mean to me. It’s a older post but I wanted to share it with all of you since many of you are new.

Background Music:
Fife and Drums

I am surrounded and they seek to destroy me fully. They wait patiently, ever quiet and knowledgeable that they have but one chance. For I… I am bigger than they are. For I, the fierce and unbeaten warrior, tower over them. They know they must use stealth to break me, to take charge and defeat me. To draw blood from me is awe-inspiring to them. It can be done! He who draws blood today will be remembered in the halls of manhood for his accomplishments.

I know they are there awaiting my false move. Waiting for me to turn the wrong way, make a wrong choice. For when I do, they will pounce. Oh, heavens, will they pounce. They will hold back nothing. They will bring the fight to me. Small though they are, they shall spring forth into action with the bravery of a 1,000 warriors until they or I am defeated.

All is quiet. I step slowly into the darkness, knowing what must come. Knowing the battle will rage, blood may be shed. A winner will be declared this day. There shall be nothing held back. No stroke, no swipe, no thrown punch will be stilled. Measuring, I take one step and the wrong move has been made. I have caused a slight disturbance, a crackle, to be sounded across this plain of battle.

Air is breathed. Silently. Knowingly. I join the legion that have come before to fight this battle. Sensing movement before it springs, I ready for this encounter knowing it may well be my last. Knowing full well total destruction might lie in the next few seconds because I placed my foot wrong.

And they come. Come with fierceness beyond their years. Battle hardened and brave. Power beats through their bodies as they rush me in the darkness. I am hit suddenly low and then again in the middle. Towering man that I am, I topple forth to be pummeled by these small warriors with everything they have and more. Everything they offer is given to my defeat. I fight back, holding back only a little.

Their war cries echo across this plain of battle. Calling to the crows and eaters of the dead and defeated. My youngest grabs hold of my leg with everything he has. Three feet shorter than I he has the strength of a bear. My oldest son, stout and strong knocks the wind out of me as he pins me to the bed and manages to hold one arm down with all his strength.

However, today, victory shall not come! I am to be victorious again! For I… I have one free hand! In one fell swoop I have command of this battle field. I, battle tested and weary have turned the tides of this battle! Momentum is now mine! Lunging in with my free hand to divide these mighty warriors, I separate their attacks. Flanked now and outmaneuvered, they hold their positions tenaciously but it is for naught. Today the battle is mine! With the command capability of Patton and the flamboyance of Macarthur, my free hand makes one gigantic move that sweeps both these mighty warriors into my arm and frees my once pinned hand. I now crush them to me!

As these fierce warriors struggle in my grasp, I exact the loathed form of punishment they so desperately seek to avoid! I smack them full on the mouth and declare my love!

My Heart cries out joyfuly in my victory! My warriors! My Boys Turning to Men! My Joy! Fight on Dear Ones! Fight on!

Wondering how old your "wannabe" teen is? (And a daughter at that...) God truly is diabolical when he gives a man a daughter. All those pants you tried to get into when you were younger? LOL...and now YOU have a DAUGHTER. lol...

I make mistakes, I am out of control & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. ~Marilyn

I wish I could've been a fly on the wall to watch the battle, bet it was hilarious. I always did love to see when my dad would wrestle with my brothers like that. Or any man having fun with his kids in that way.

I loved your story Trav...cuz it really, really shows how much you love those kids...and I'm so glad to see that you are able to show your little ones that...and I bet you probably say it often.

Don't ever stop telling them and showing them... don't let'em grow up not ever knowing or feeling the love. Cuz it's hard to get that back sometimes when they grow up. I was able to get that back from my dad, but some people never do...and they never know.

But...your a good man..and you've grown a lot...so I sincerely doubt your kids will not ever have to worry about that....and that's a good thing.

~~~ Just me, poppin to say HI! ~~
LMAO! Good one! I'm sure they weren't expecting that at all! I wish I'd have been there, though. You know with me there, we could have taken you...
space (hehe)
space (haha)
Oh, and by the way! Open mouthed kisses do not bother me, so you'll have to find another way to win with me on their team!
Enjoy them now. Seriously. I'm wondering when my three year old got smart enough and old enough to get away from kisses. And where the last three years went while she's avoiding those kisses.
They are lucky children to have a father that cares so much. When I was younger, I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that I was loved and lucky for the parents I had. But it wasn't until I moved out and experienced life on my own that I realized how great the gifts they had given me. Although I'm sure they will know how much you love them, one day they will look back on childhood games with a smile and reflect on all their father taught them.
Awwww! What a wonderful post! Your children are so fortunate to have a Daddy who allows them to be kids....and is a big kid himself!
Same sort of thing happened to my hubby....it was a couple of years ago now...him and our youngest were playing "WWE" and Daddy was "The Undertaker" and Buddy was "Kane"....needless to say, Daddy certainly was true to the name "Undertaker". He was so swollen, he missed work the next day. When I got home, he couldn't even sit anymore. Try explaining that to the Triage Nurse in the emergency room! I felt bad, I truly did, but I couldn't stop laughing!
Needless to say..."WWE" is not their favourite game of choice anymore!
Kids rock! This was a great post... I miss my ex-fiance's kids (not mine in the biological sense, but real in the almost father sense).
You are so fortunate to have that sort of relationship and I am sure it was earned by you by your love and loving your kids.
