silver screen.

silver screen.

In my native Greece, my generation was the first that grew up with television. Everyone considered it quite a novelty back then. There were only 2 chanels. Both state owned. In fact one was operated by the military. Needless to say they were black and white. The first few years they would start broadcasting around 6 pm and end at around midnight.

Other than news, sports events or special interest programs (such as 'For you, my lady', I guess a primitive version of Martha Stewart's shows...), the chanels would broadcast a Greek film every Saturday night. The rest of the air time was filled with either American or English tv series. They would arrive in Greece several years later, sometimes even decades. Subtitled of course. Believe it or not, it helped me tremendously in learning the english language.

My first tv memories were of 'The Lone Ranger', starring Clayton Moore. No, I'm not that old, it just aired in Greece decades later. But there were so many others. Shows that I loved. 'Bonanza', 'The Saint' with Roger Moore. My beloved Elizabeth Montgomery in 'Bewitched'. I could list them all... My mother, my aunts and virtually every female mamber of the family would religiously watch 'Peyton Place', starring Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal, the first soap opera of its day.

Then in my teens, 'The Waltons', 'Happy days'... Needless to say 'Charlie's Angels', 'The love boat' and 'Dallas'...

When I came to the U.S., I really enjoyed watching re-runs from yester-years, shows that I didn't have a chance to watch in Greece. Such as 'Dick Van Dyke' and 'Newhart'... On Nick at Nite of course...

These days I don't get to watch much. Greek TV seems to have hit an all-time low. Thank God for cable, we get some decent imported shows. So, I get to tape the ones that I like and hopefully catch a glimpse of them during the weekend or late at night. I always liked 'Sex and the city'. 'Desperate housewives'. 'The Shield'. 'Grey's Anatomy'. 'Without a Trace'. The entire 'Law & Order' series, meaning the main team and the spinoffs. And the various 'CSI' groups, Las Vegas, Miami and New York City.

I LOVED Bewitched growing up. I remember we would watch Soap Operas with my grandma when she kept us after school. lol.

Some of my favorite shows now are Law and Order series (they are awesome), CSI, 2 and a half Men, and Discovery, TLC, National Geographic channels.

I never wanted to miss I Love Lucy or Gilligan's Island, and Bewitched was a close 3rd place... as a family we usually watched the Waltons as well, and I'll never forget the crush I had on Lil' Joe on Bonanza, my sisters had their crushes on Adam and Hoss respectively, so we "shared" that show just fine ...

These days, I rarely watch TV and have no favorite shows, it's there mostly for renting DVDs and watching Scooby Doo with my kiddo occasionally .

Apparently the depth of depravity here is bottomless... don't you feel right at home?

I remember Black and White...
and years later, I had a dance with the Soap Operas...
almost ran off and auditioned for one of them

Happy now that I didn't

Just a little food for thought.............

Nice post and great memories.
