On Joy & Sorrow

Then a woman said, "Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow."

And he answered:

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.

When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

- The Prophet by Khalil Gibran

I post this because at the end of this year I was looking back over my life and how this year went. I have had a lot of disappointments in my life, and many of them were caused by decisions I made and mistakes as well. I have had a lot of happy times this year, and quite a few of them were brought to me by my friends on here. And, like everyone, I want to be happy more often. It seems harder to find what I want as I go, and I am pretty sure that I have missed out on it already. But as written above, that which has given me sorrow will give me joy, so I enter the New Year hopeful for the joy side of my scale to be weighed down a little more.

I wish all of my friends all the joy they can handle in the New Year.

WOW. That was brilliantly posted! I think many of us share the same sentiments; why else are we here if not to seek something more?

Have a great year,

Paradise is there, behind that door, in the next room; but I have lost the key. Perhaps I have only mislaid it.

WOW Ted this of all days hun I needed to be reminded of that... this morning an officer knocked at my door to deliver the papers that was the closing of one life and the opening up of my new one. As isigned for those divorce papers I laughed and made a pass at the very sexy cop..then as I read them I couldn't finish without a good cry. Life is bittersweet at best. the last day of the last day of a six year chapter in my life...and with that comes both sorrow and joy!! *hugs my friend...and wonderment at how or when you got so wise....for a man..lol* Chelle.
