Black History

Why is it that we study Black History only one month out of the year. Don't we study history to learn about our past. So why don't we include all history. My high school teacher was teaching about Black History way before they had too. It was amazing the thing we learned.

I understand the original intent, but I have always had a problem with the concept of a Black History Month. History is history and the teaching of it should reflect the contributions of all Americans.

In my mind, to celebrate Black History Month, although it is a laudable to spotlight African-Americans, in a way maintains that separate, but equal mentality.

Climbs down off soapbox.

well i guess it was an attempt to bring some sort of satisfaction to the african americans in america. we have had some very powerful leaders who have even protested and wanted more. history should be about learning EVERYTHING...america is one of the most diverse places and we should have the richest history....with everyone's story and how they came about being here.

studying the diaspora and all the movements open up a whole world of history. learning your roots and knowing your family is important. i have done research to see where i have come from. on my dads side mostly native american, and my moms, trace back to the carribean and south america....SO what does that make me...an american...with differnt branches on my family tree. do i study the history of all my people...YES i try to learn something about them every chance i get. (my people meaning my family) thank you for this post..it got me thinking.....

sunrise loves ya!!!

live more, laugh often, love much
