Langston Hughes from 5/17/2006

Today I was reminded by one of the threads that Langston Hughes was gay, all because of some new text book laws in California.

I studied Langston in some detail for a paper in college. I came out of it with this poem stuck in my mind forever. Perhaps because I also have some color to my skin.

I, too, sing America
Langston Hughes

"I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America."

If I too was America, I would get this as a tattoo..
