would that the whole world were...

...comparable to the spirit of the Olympic games.

I just finished watching the closing ceremonies to the 2006 Winter Olympics. I didn't follow the games this year. I'm usually a winter games junkie...watching nearly every event with the possible exception of hockey. As a midwesterner, I never quite "got" hockey: but then I never quite "got" football either...go figure!! The opening and closing ceremonies are always geared to pull at the heartstrings, but considering all that's going on in the world these days, it was particularly poignant this year. As NBC played back victories and horrible "falls from grace" that occurred throughout the games this year, I was struck by the raw emotion on the faces of the athletes: both the joy at winning and the devastation at falling. I was also struck by the universal pride of the athletes in their accomplishments. To have won positions on their respective teams is quite a feat unto itself.

It seems to me that the governments of the world could take a lesson from these games and the spirit behind them. Unfortunately, there are those who cannot see beyond their narrow views–whether religious or political–and so we have wars. There are so many who feel that if others don't believe as they do that those others should be killed. How sad is that?

If you are strong and push through the pain and the fear, you often find that happiness is waiting for you on the other side.
