March 9

Today we joined Hugh and Jen for a boat ride across the bay to Ixtapa Island. This was part of their package and they wanted us to join them. We arrived at the island and our guide was Abraham: and interesting name for a Mexican guide! He was delightful!! Our lunch was included, so we placed our orders and then went over to another beach on the other side of the island with snorkeling gear. This was a first for me. It was great fun, but a little scary. As a swimmer, the breathing thing is so much different. It was difficult to get the fact that you just breathe normally instead of deeply as you do when you’re swimming. I didn’t stay in very long cuz I got a little pebble in my flipper and it was SO painful!! By the time I got back to the beach to take off the flipper and get the rock out, I was too tired to go back in for awhile. I did see some beautiful fish while I was out, although the water was a little murky. Rick had been watching our stuff, so he was ready to go when I got out. There were lots of folks wandering around on the beach among the tourists selling their wares. I ended up buying some more jewelry from one of them. He had some really beautiful stuff and I LOVE jewelry!!! We headed back over to the other beach, where our lunch was to be served. It was quite good. Rick was feeling a little under the weather and decided to go have a siesta in the hammocks and Jen did the same. Hugh and I decided to stay on the beach and do a little swimming. There was a group of Mexican women playing child’s games and having so much fun. We were watching them and smiling and they saw us and motioned us over to join them, so we did! How could we resist? They were so charming and we had great fun with them. While we were there, a boat came up to the beach with a large cache of shells for sale. Hugh has an aquarium with some hermit crabs needing a bigger home, He couldn’t remember how big the shells needed to be, so I went over to the hammocks and woke the sleeping beauties. It was nearly time to catch our ride back to the mainland anyway. The plan for the evening was to go to dinner at Bogart’s, a high-end restaurant next to the Krystal Ixtapa, where Hugh and Jen were staying. I needed to hit an ATM, so I headed out for a little stroll to the bank. When I got back to the hotel, Rick was in the lobby. The look on his face said it all!! He’d had enough of the companionship of our friends, and we figured the most graceful way to get out of going to dinner with them was for him to plead illness. He was feeling a little funky so he just made it seem worse than it really was so we could escape!! Hugh took us back to our bungalow and we both breathed a sigh of relief. We decided to go back to La Gaviota for dinner again, since it was so good the previous night. Another beautiful day in paradise!!
