if you forget me

if you forget me

i want you to know
one thing.

you know how this is:
if i look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if i touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
i shall stop loving you little by little.

if suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for i shall already have forgotten you.

if you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where i have roots,
that on that day,
at that hour,
i shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

I can tell it's a fine poem. But I wish I had the necessary sophistication to embrace it and "feel it". Count yourself lucky, Slightly, that you have that gift of poetical insight.

Hi there
When i need a 'poem for the day' i check into your blog!
Pablo Neruda's love poetry is too much for me right now.....all that sweet yearning for love simply reminds of what i no longer have... i can't accomodate free-floating beautiful feelings because i really need to attach them to a love object (i.e a woman) to give the feeling grounding, give the beauty the real tangible shape of a soul.....i mean, even listening to Coldplay's 'Fix You' (which you were listening to the other day) just makes me well up.....and i can't bear the sadness of the sweetness.....
Maybe when I'm in love again i can feel into Neruda without getting overwhelmed.....
Here's somebody you might like to check out, a Polish poet called Wislawa Szymborska....(she won the Nobel prize for Literarure in 1996)

'Nothing ever happens twice
As a consequence
We arrive here improvised
And leave without the chance to practise'

Life is not 'second' anything...it's always 'first this'....

If you forget me
remember this one thing

I am a manly man
dressed up in a tutu

erik - i still truly think anyone can like poetry when they finally find the right poem. but maybe you are right, maybe there is more to it than that. i also think i am wonderfully lucky to love words too but it is something i have grown in to.

being eros - you liked it? i'm glad, there’s some great lines in that poem.

janmecir - i think when you least can stand to listen, or to hear, is usually when you need it the most. i'm a strong believer in going with the emotion. i will check out wislawa szymborska and thanks for the recommendation. that reminds of another eastern european poet who's work i like and if i can remember how to spell his name i might put up one of his poems. i think he was from poland too.

nipafluff (what does that name mean anyways?) i suppose it is about conditional love. realistic, immature and almost harsh love for sure, but also love which seems ever so passionate.

batman - have you been drinking again?

Hi there
I think it might be Czeslaw Milosz...

Here's something else by szymborska:

'All is mine but nothing owned
Nothing owned by memory
and mine only while I look'

So i use this to keep pressing my presence into the very next moment (this moment, right here, now).....and not only through 'looking'....but feeling....and listening...and touching....and tasting.....etc etc

I had a little love affair with Symborska last year...(i don't mean literally - she's about 70 years old!)...

No, I don't need Neruda (or Coldplay) to catalyse my feelings for me right now.....i can intensify and magnify them all by myself.....no poetry therapy necessary!.....i have no difficulty in 'going with my emotion'...it's all there...underneath me.....like a tidal wave...ready to surge......

yes, it was czeslaw milosz. a funny thing happened though today janmecir. a couple of years ago i hung on his words. i loved them, but i looked at them today and they just seemed to not be right for me. i was so surprised and am hoping it was just a momentary fluke and that i will look back tomorrow and see the wonder that i use to see there.

i liked your post. thanks for reading my blog.

i looked at google. it was talking about dick and dora in the happy venture readers?

"fluff is a big cat. she has a big basket. dick will bring the basket for fluff. it is by the tree. fliff runs to the basket and sits in it. "

"this is dick. run, dick, run. nip is a dog. nip, run to dick. see dora run."

i can't help wondering what made you make that choice of names.
