Things I Rember

Christmas has passed and the new year is approaching. While many people are making party plans for New Years Eve, I get more reflective about life. These are just a few memories fresh in my mind tonight.

Christmas when I was six years old. I wanted a talking GI Joe doll. I couldn't sleep all night. Finally my mother let me take the doll to bed so I could sleep. Instead I figured out how to make it talk and kept everyone up the remainder of the night.

I was about 8 years old. I grew up in the country. I was learning how to shoot a bow and arrow for the first time. I realeased the arrow wrong and it backfired into my arm. No permanent or serious injury, but sure made my mom anxious with all that blood.

Target shooting with my friends around age 8. We would set up targets and pumpkins. .22 rifles for the targets, shotguns for the pumkins. My dad got pissed that we used all his ammo.

I was about 10 and killed my first animal. It was a raccoon. Some of the neigboring kids had it cornered and were throwing stones at it and using pellet guns...trying to kill it. He was in bad shape when I found him. I felt so sorry for the little guy. I don't think he would have made it throught the night so I shot him.

I remeber going camping and fishing every summer in the Addarondiacks. The lakes and woods were buetiful. I remember catching rainbow trout. I remember going off into the woods alone and just sitting still. The birds and animals would come out. If you sat still they were not afraid of you and would get quite close. I remeber the black bears coming near me. Those guys scared me! Sometimes they would come right up into camp. You could smell them, that's how close they were. They never bothered me or my family but I have seen them attack. The first time was when someone approached a cub. The bear chased him away and gave him a warning swipe. The second time was a family from the NYC area camping in a tent. We warned them not to store food in their tent. They didn't listen. The bear decide to add a rear door in the tent while they slept. I awoke to see the man chasing the bear with an axe while his family cried. The bear turned and charged him. The man jumped clear in time, got his family in the car and got out of there. they never returned for their gear.

I remember hunting pheasant, duck and deer as a teenager.

I remember losing my virginity at 17 to my high school sweetheart. We were your average hot and horny teens. We'd sneek off into the woods for heavy makeout sessions. One early summer evening a light rain storm came up. We grapped a couple of blankets and headed for a black walnut tree. The tree offered some protection and we spread a blanket on the ground. We used the second blanet to cover us as we made love. I still remember the musty, wet smell of the blanket, the sound of the rain, and the light breeze blowing over us. I still enjoy making love outdoors.

When I was 32 years old I met a woman in a telephone chat room. This was before the internet and computer chat's. She had a 5 year old son, and had just left an abusive husband. Six months later she and her son were living with me.

I married that woman when I was 39. It was far from a prefect marrige. It had plenty of up's and downs. When things were bad, they were real bad. Likewise when things were good, it was real good.

When I was 41 she passed away unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism. She collaspded one morning in the bathroom. I called 911 but the paramedics couldn't do anything. I remember holding her in my arms as she took her last breath. 9:47 am Jan 22, 2002.

These are the thoughts with me tonight.
