Proud of your country? America the Free, the Home of the Lame!

I am ashamed.

I am ashamed of this Government.

I am ashamed of this President.

Aren't you?

After watching his press conference today, a sense of shame overtook me. I'm ashamed that he took to the podium today as if he emptied out a container of laughing gas. I'm ashamed of a President who has the temerity to laugh when asked a question about war. I'm ashamed of the whores of the fourth estate who care more about having the honor of being the butt of one of the President's jokes than about exposing the truth to the American people. I'm ashamed that millions of my fellow Americans are so scared and so desperate for leadership that they believe the President's bullshit.

I am ashamed. I'm ashamed of this President, this megalomaniac hellbent on leaving his assprint on the map of the Middle East, no matter how much destruction is wrought and no matter how much blood flows in the streets of lands that never threatened us. I'm ashamed that when I see the American flag waiving, images of flag-draped coffins flash in my mind. I'm ashamed of Freedom's March. Ashamed when I see villages reduced to rubble. Ashamed when I see the tiny little corpses. God, they're so painfully tiny--lined up in a row, little angels wrapped in colorful blankets that starkly contrast against their gray-tinged faces. Ashamed when I see wailing Iraqis slam their hands against plain, unvarnished coffins, over and over, asking "Why? Is this democracy? Why?" When I see those image of funerals, of broken families, I want to crawl into my TV, I want to go to them and grab their slumped shoulders and scream "I'm sorry, good god, I'm so sorry. I want to leave, I want us to leave, believe me. But they won't listen...No one listens anymore."

I'm ashamed that the word "massacre" is even uttered in connection with our actions in Iraq. I'm ashamed it's not just one massacre that is alleged, but two. I'm ashamed it's gotten to the point that I can't even tell this little voice inside of me to shut up, that little voice that says maybe, just maybe it could be true. That the impossible may be plausible. Before this war, I would have rejected such claims outright. But that voice of plausibility is the consequence of those black hoods. It's the consequence of those leashes, those snarling dogs. It's the consequence of those detainees chained to bedframes. Of naked pyramids. Of forced sex acts. Of beatings and blood-streaked floors.

I am ashamed. Ashamed that Justice is no longer blindfolded, but gagged. Ashamed that in America, in AMERICA, I can only protest in "free speech zones" the size of postage stamps. Ashamed that by the time I'll take my oath as an officer of the court to support the Constitution, I'll be swearing to uphold a tattered document that has managed to survive over 200 years only to be shredded by this President in less than eight.

I am ashamed. Ashamed that in America, I see bearded men panhandling in the street, holding cardboard signs that read "U.S. Vet, can't work, need food. God bless." Ashamed that somewhere, in our America, a grandmother is sitting alone at her kitchen table, crumpled bills clutched in her thin hands, agonizing over the choice before her: medicine for her pain, or food to keep on living. Ashamed that there is a child who will go to sleep tonight on a cot in an orphanage, with no one to read him a story, no one to stroke his hair and kiss him goodnight, because the American Taliban thinks gay Americans can't love, can't parent, can't provide.

I am ashamed of my fellow Americans. Ashamed that they haven't flooded the streets. Ashamed they care more about Brangelina than the Bill of Rights. Ashamed that they're seemingly ok with the subtle but steady transformation from democracy to dictatorship. Ashamed that they are so gullible.

I am ashamed of myself. For not having the courage or the strength to do anything else but sit here and blog. I write. I protest. I vote. And yet, I'm impotent. Stuck in a unrelenting cycle of hope and despair and hope and despair. What a curse it is to be 40 and having felt proud that in our youth we would have had the guts to change the world. What a curse to be so disillusioned so early in life. What a curse to want to change a world that will not change...that cannot change? That cannot change as long as we sit and wait for others to change it. That cannot change as long as our elected Democrats refuse to take a principled stand. That cannot change until they--until we--appreciate the gravity of the situation before us: we are losing America.

This is not America. I refuse to accept it. America doesn't torture "enemy combatants." America doesn't jail people and leave them incommunicado for years. America doesn't sit idly by as an entire people are exterminated in Darfur. America doesn't stifle science. America doesn't conduct massive, secret spying on innocent citizens. America doesn't believe the individual is an annoyance, an impediment to supreme government power. This isn't the greatest democracy on earth. This isn't the nation that pioneered human rights. This isn't the America that leads the world, that leads humanity towards a greater good. No, I refuse to accept this America of shame. This is not my America. It is an America perverted by Republican stewardship and Democratic Malaise. A nation that under GOP rule and Democratic vacancy, we have abandoned our founding ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. True Americans--coast to coast, young and old--now bow their heads silently in collective shame for a nation that has lost its way.

There ... I said it ... even though I crossed the line and went off into an ideological place.

I swear - were it not for the TV remote control or the Internet or Playstation 2, we would all become outraged and actually do something about it.

For once.

Im ashamed that I see no one responding to your text...but then ..I guess Im the first...so ..OK. Youre right ..the America that used to be is NO MORE....and its a goddam shame.....The only part of youre blog that I disagree with is ....the same Regime that attacked us on 9-11-01 is still partly in power..and Terrorism is still a very VALID threat.....there are plenty of cells of terrorism that are anxious to do us harm...that doesnt justify the killing of Innocents however I dont know the answer...George isnt the answer...thats for sure. Hes a fickle Coward...and God help us as far as who will rear up his ugly head next as the leader of America..............We need a Real STRONG prayer.

Well, among the rights you have not yet exercised, is the right to leave. If you're that ashamed, get on out.

except for Darfur ... on that one the entire world sleeps ,,, as usual ... where is the UN? ... nowhere ... where are other counties .. nowhere .. .including my wimpy one.

the "free speach" one i'll take head on ....... wait till the next, and horrendous city-loosing attack, (or more likely even city(S) ).... just stand aside or u'll get trampled bi the left rushing to empower the govt to do ANYTHING to protect them.... bi finally fighting the war they , including anti terrorrist wimp bush, dont really understand they are in. Even bush "Doesnt Get It", to echo Col Hunt.

we have studied the fundamentalist workings since caught onto it back in late 80's ....... your govt ( and for sure mine) isnt even close in evaluting the danger .. that WILL happen ..... we should worry about being wiretapped while calling Iran every day? .... vs the cities we WIL loose? .. .no, few "Get It" ,... even today.

Not your usual silent "Noises from the North", i guess.

I am seriously contemplating becoming an ex-patriot...because Ive come to the conclusion that the America today is rapidly becoming a place that I dont want to be......or be a part OF........It seems that a President with real values as well as BALLS isnt going to be in our near future.........for a long time.............IF EVER. Its a sad situation...but Im thinking CABO!!

Oh my! Death, taxes and a low-rent version of Archie Bunker.

Gosh, I just live for that moment when you get that "America, love it or leave it!" form of selective amnesia, while choking down the buckets of Cheetos and pails of Jolt soda ... and even then, how does it feel knowing that your waistline now exceeds your IQ?

As a lifelong progressive and fiscal conservative I cannot be dismissed as one of those tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists or an incompetent blue state minority-interest liberal freakshow peacenik. Nor am I totally ignorant of foreign affairs and military policy - nor have I been giving the Democratic party a free pass on their mistakes either, because most of them signed on for the Baghdad revival tour as well. In 1984 and 1985 I spent more time defending our country abroad in many, many late night arguments with elitist Europeans than I did earning a paycheck overseas. But since 2000, I would hate to be over there now, left with a cabal of outraged Euros to explain our delusions about God, Country and Iraqi colonization.

It is indeed a fact that I actively supported Clinton in 1992 and John Kerry in 2004 - but in the case of Dubya's re-election I have been sadly disappointed by my fellow Americans. The categorical failures of the U.S. in the Middle East are not nearly so disturbing as the implications of our actions. Which country of dark-skinned heathens do we bomb next? Will Dubya invade Bangalore once there are no more call center jobs left in Little Rock? We do recognize that Our Child Preznut does have a geographical deficiency - given that the Commander in Heat during the Vietnam years was protecting Houston from the Viet Cong.

Does the right wing want to put the entire Muslim world on another set of reservations? Can you seriously defend any Administration who gets its foreign policy advice from Dick Cheney and Condi Rice? Is it a fact, as I have read and heard, that even the staunchest conservatives are worried that ours failures in Iraqi underscore Rumsfeld's intention to provoke Iran and Syria into another costly war - so that Dubya can crown himself Emperor with a Supreme Court packed with a fresh pair of cronies who regard habius corpus as nothing more than a minor inconvenience?

We cannot claim victory in Iraq without eventually killing us all, and - unless you wake up and start acting like a rational human being instead of the batshit political fiend you play here in this blog - you and your kind will wake up some day in Gitmo, with a mob of outraged rednecks beating you with rubber hoses for a simple explanation - and why you supported a moron with a bullhorn when he said Saddam Hussein had WMD.

Actually, to be totally blunt about Michael Moore, he's a bumper sticker activist and I really don't know anyone with a brain who takes him that seriously. If you are as informed and as passionate about security, as your comment seems to suggest, doesn't the Right Wing hold a total monopoly of power in Washington these days?

So what's the deal then - these great and powerful minds can't get together in line to provide real border security, port screening and a National Security Infrastructure that could do more than have 258 million Americans jumping off kitchen chairs in unison.

You don't have to be a serious political junkie to feel a thick and foreboding sense of doom at the prospect of another two years of the Dubya Comes Back from the Dead victory lap in 2006. It feels like a rerun of 1972: Just another vindicated, self-righteous, greed-energized, petty crook, dimwit, radical Rethug president just inches from criminal prosecution, once the people finally sit up and take notice.

Goddamn, I thought. Can't wait to see what happens next. Alas, a sick and twisted Dickie, he fell like a diseased Redwood in the forest, engulfed by his own personality disorder and how he would be remembered ...

So anyone who disagrees with Bush administration policies should leave? Real patriots don't leave, nor do they blindly accept destructive, ill-conceived foreign and domestic policies with a shrug and a yellow ribbon--that isn't patriotism, it's complacency. If you love your country and see it on a disastrous path--and at this point, if you don't look around you and see disaster looming, I can't help you--then you're not exercising good citizenship. It's not just a right, it's a duty to maintain a voice in the health of our country, especially at times when poor leadership runs us aground. Trusting these selfish, cynical, smug people to do the right thing is folly. This war was predicated on lies, largely by men who never served their country. Are they patriots? They're profiteers with pockets bulging with money from the military/industrial/lobbyist complex. You OK with that Goalie? I'm not. And I'm not leaving and I'm not gonna shut-up either, that would be un-American
