Come Together

One of the current debates over here in the UK is around the creation of a National Day. This is in part a response to the London suicide bombers, and the general concern of increasing lack of integration from immigrant communities, but also a reflection on the perceived lack of community cohesion these days.

Personally I am not convinced one day will change hearts and minds in the way some Politicians believe it might. True when I lived in East Asia Singapore and Malaysian National days were successful, and, popular events and perhaps did help to bring diverse ethnic groups together - but only for one day! I cannot remember too many Malays marrying Chinese, or Tamils for that matter.

And to by honest we have enough flag days over here, almost any excuse these days, the last being winning the Ashes from Australia.

People do undoubtedly need to come together more, but they have to be willing to come together. Probably increased interest in separatist religious schools for the young together with greater religious adherence to clothing that further distancies the wearer from everyday society, combined with an increasingly cynical and secular everyday society around them suggests that we have some way to go.

Bugger I don't know what the answer is, but I do know we need more than a day a year to sort it, and all of us need to be a lot more understanding.
