villainous villains

I got to thinking as I was sitting here, what makes us love to hate villains so much?

Is it their downright nastiness? Their power and strength? Their ability to get under our skin? The way they crush all opposition. Take Darth Vader for instance - with him its his height, the black clothes and his imposing stance, the voice...oooooh creeepy, and his overwhelming urge to take over the universe!

As a child I was absolutely terrified of the Daleks in Dr Who...'Exterminate, Exterminate'...I used to hide behind a chair, and watch from between my fingers. And although i was terrified of them, I couldnt stop watching. It was a compulsion, a need to see these terrifying machines wreak their havoc!

So many villains to choose from, so little time!

My favourite is Catwoman, the old school girls, Eartha Kitt played her beautifully, and so did Julie Newmar. Those slinky girls, with those kinky costumes. Claws sheathed, and tails twitching, they tied Batman up in knots..making the masked man squirm.

So, who's your favourite villain.? Who makes you shiver and shake, gets your ire up, makes you shudder in unease? Who sets your pulse a-racing, and your chest constricting in terror?

To me... a good villain is one you truly despise... love to hate... That would be William Hamleigh a character in the book, "Pillars of the Earth". what an asshole!
