The Midnight Cowboy...

Yes, I remember there was a movie by this name. It stared Jon Voight. And it was a hell of a movie. It made me wonder at the time, (cause I was flat broke!) if I could be a midnight cowboy? I knew the how and why, just didn't know how to get started.

This Midnight Cowboy...

Come along
down the venues of past wants and needs,
past dreams, wondering through
a myriad of thoughts.
Past self esteem, and ego trips.
Past the values you once held true...
and yes,
past your own self judgment.

Walk along with me
down to the dark end...
where everything happens
but no one ever sees.
Go down to the dark alley
and seduce...
and be seduced
by those that would only
laugh at you and take you
for only what they want...
then leave you in your own
world of grief and disgust.

Go down in dirty cotton sheets
and remember where you were
just a short while ago.
Smell the stale air,
and understand the meaning
of being down to base matters.
Know that as soon
as they are finished with you
you can then eat... and perhaps
sleep the dreamless dreams
that don't really matter
to anyone...
or anywhere.

But before you go
to that dark part of your mind,
go back into the dimly lite
foul smelling bar and get another...
just so you have something
to tie you over,
in case weather or sickness
keeps you off the street
or out of the alley
in the endless nights to come.

Keep your private life
as private as you can
even while giving up your body
in any and all
personal ways imagined...
except in love.

Be primal in your act.
It is only the business
that has gone on
since the very beginning...
and still practiced nightly...
even by those who think
it is called love,
behind the closed doors
of the wealthy mansions up the road.

Your's is at least honest
within your own mind.
There are no promises
of tomorrow,
only the promise of
the here and now....
the promise of
"I'll get you there,
just relax and don't fight it."

Yes, walk with me
again down that street
that alleyway,
that dark corner
where you dream of being
anywhere else but there.

Do you dare?
No, and you shouldn't.
It's safer walking
inside you warm safe home...
than out here,
where life is at it's very basic.

No, I never became that Midnight Cowboy. I wasn't far enough down, I guess.
But had the timing been different....
we all might have been.

I don't know, Tiller... I might be beyond the point where age would make that kinda tough. LOl! I might not attract as many as when I was in my early twenties. To be sure, there isn't much call for a mid-fifties cowboy? (I'm very glad you are back my friend.)

Fly, this movie was back in the late sixties. Loved the theme song, too![/]

Purry, me too. His "Five People You Meet In Heaven" was excellent. Thanks for coming by. I really enjoy ya'll's blog! hug, unlisted

Everything is about "timing" Angel. I problably would have starved anyway. lol
