A Summit

A Summit's Overview...

Walking up past
the old building
with it's window panes
given way,
up through the gate
that lies half open
half down on the ground ---
years of hanging on
given way to being
too tired to stand on its own...
moving slowly upward...
each pace a little shorter
than the last
each one less measured
until I reached the
top of the hill.

An old tree
limbs twisted
some toward the sky...
others closer to ground
each showing signs
of too many seasons
bearing down upon them.

A granite rock
starched of color
by the heat
smoothed by wind and rain
lies partially exposed
stolidly held by the earth
lies only paces away.

The grass
lying toward
the downward side
brown, yet knee length tall
swirls and leaves a brushing sound
for my ears...
my senses to hear and feel.

Thus it is
the way it is
at the top of the hill.

I don't know
if you saw this view---
I don't know
if you ever reached this height...
but if you did
you didn't disturb
the nature of the summit.

Neither did I.

I arrived here
long ago while on a journey
And in it's memory
I thought to bury
a written thought
under the largest root
of the tree.

It's no longer there.

Either misplaced
robbed, or just taken away
by someone/something
more mystical than I can imagine
my thoughts
hopelessly gone...
not to return.

So I've climbed
back to reach this place...
this moment.
With more
knowledge than before
but not enough
to befit the journey.

I look at the tree,
the granite stone,
and see and hear the grass
and it reminds me...
of then.

Looking down into
the valley on the
other side
I wonder why
I didn't explore there?
(Surely I must have seen it before!)
Turning back
looking down the
washed out path
that I ventured--
I see a figure...
slowly advancing my way.

Is it you?
Or is it him?

One will extend
the adventure...
the other...
will take me... where?

I will wait
on the summit...
on the rock
surrounded by the grass
underneath the withered tree.

Too weary
too tired
to drink in again
the nectar of life
and gaze out
in wonder.

I don't feel
the need
to explore the valleys
or the mountaintops
I don't want
to feel...
if the feeling
is lost in the
reaching out
of the touch.

And the darkness
of the evening
is upon me.

This is beautiful, poignant, and even a little sad. I wonder, as usual, what was in the message that you buried??? So, I will wait for the "more to come". But thank you for letting us share a part of your journey..........143.

Very nice waiting for more. It gets me to thinking of the days of my youth when I yoused to room the mountains up home and the things I saw.

I've read enough of your writing to know that you are very talented and can write with the best of them. My writing pales compared to yours, sweetness. But I'm glad you liked it.

being "up on the mountain" is one of my special memories too. Sometimes I long to be back up on the mountains again. I'm glad I could give you your memories of them again.

Ahhh, Angel... you have hit on something very important here. Just what was in the message that I hid?

This poem, like so many that I write, I take from several sources. Some are written about the things happening around me. Others, are written because someone gave me a "word" and the poem followed that avenue. Some others, are written with a specific reason or person, in mind.

Still others, are taken from the things in my past that have actually happened.

I actually did hide a note (under stone really) a long time ago. And it was on top of a mountain, under tall pines, with the wind blowing up the mountainside. And years later, I found my way back to that place. And I found the spot where I sat and wrote, and I found that stone. What I didn't find was the note. But like in the movie, "Message in a Bottle," I figured the note that I left was hopefully read and understood. Perhaps, even two lovers found it and read it together... and it just deepened their love for each other. I would like to think that that happened.

Anyway, the note... Well, let me put it this way...

Message Under the Stone

I rose early...
and carried with me
a pen and paper
to write something for you.

To tell the world
how much I loved you.
To tell each and every person
how much you mean to me.

And I went to my place...
high up in the mountains...
where you and I had walked
and smiled
and viewed the world surrounding this mountain peak
with fresh loving eys that had no fear...
as long as we had each other.

That was the place
to capture on paper my thoughts
my dreams,
my undying love for you.
And in that place
where you
were beside me always.

I sat
and wrote...
told you my hopes for our future.
How together,
we could make our lives happy - - -
I spoke of our love for each other,
and the pride that burst in me
when someone spoke of you and me...
together... as one.

The day was warm,
as I recall.
The breeze was stiff...
and I remembered how you held tight
when you got too close to the edge.

And I remembered your eyes...
your wonderful deep dark eyes...
and how they gazed upon me
and filled me with a warmth I never knew before.

Those are the things
that I wrote that day.
Those are the dreams I cherished
on paper... and in my heart.
Not for just that day;
but through all of the days that have followed...
even until this very moment.

And the final words I wrote
were the last words you spoke to me
from the night before...

"I love you."

hug Angel, 143 me

And a special thank you to "Charlie..." who has inspired me to write the "first" note. 143...[/b
