what was he thinking

i need to preface this post with a disclosure of a sort.

i have worked with a variety of races, religious back grounds, male, female, straight, gay... you get the picture. i don't feel that any one or the other is worse a worker than another. having said that...

i worked in a automotive dealer that was being bought out by a larger company. in the shop, we had a technician who was asian. hard worker, great teacher, great quality work. i'd hire him in a heartbeat. well, when this other company took over, there was a large banquet dinner for everyone. the manditory kind of dinner, which meant it was really a "manditory meeting but if we feed you, we don't have to pay you your hourly wage" kind of dinner.

as soon as the new "powers that be" stepped up to the podium to start giving us their little shpeel, this asian technician stood up, and started yelling very loudly.

"what dit i heya dat you no lika asians?! i heya dat you big cum-puh-nee have gwate hatwed of koweans, chinese, and vietnamese. how i know dat you not goin to fiah me nek week? cuz i asian, and i tink you all gonna fiah me soon. is dat da way you all do bidness? you let me know now so i doan uh hafa sit trew your speeches."

everyone who had worked with this guy for a long time, and knew him as a great guy to work with were very surprised and wondered "what the hell got into him?" of course, he was assured that his job was safe. and it was. he continued to work there for many more years.

it came very clear the next day around the rumor mill, when we realized that this was pure brilliance. he just had 200 + employees as witness to the testament that his job was not in jeapordy.

i thought about this guy the other day, and wondered how he was doing. and then i thought about posting his story in my blog, but changed my mind and decided not to. i changed my mind again tonight, and posted it on the off chance that somebody somewhere might be able to save their own job using a similar strategy. i have to admit, i thought it was brilliant.

it is and also very funny. I too..have worked all my life in dealerships... I KNOW ALL ABOUT THOSE meetings. Yep... I used to work for one of the biggest dealerships in Tucson..up until mid March when I finally got tired of my "cunt" boss..yes that's right ... I said "cunt"...and she was too. Anyway.. I can certainly identify.

you and i could probably trade horror stories about working in the automotive industry for HOURS! dealerships especially! the post above about going home.... yeah, back to a dealer i just left. It's for my benefit though. they just got bought out, and i'll be going back and getting the same bennies as everyone else... starting from scratch! it is however with a great group of guys. it's the only place i've ever worked where i consider most of the other techs as good friends.

thanks for stopping by, slide. i always enjoy hearing from you. and remember, if a pissy customer has a problem with their car, it's usually caused by the nut behind the wheel.

OH..man...Tires..I do have a zillion and one stories of my days at the dealership...I'll share one with ya...(so many to choose from)..lets' see...ok..here's one. For about 15 of my 26 years working in dealerships I worked the "technician" counter...yep...I was a back counter kinda gal....and a damn good one too.

Anyway, this one day we had a customer come in and he swore up one side and down the other that a part my Parts Manager had sold him was the wrong one....well, ya know Tires...sometimes there isn't any other thing it can be other than the same EXACT one he got.

Well, that wasn't good enough for Mr. customer...and he griped and bitched and moaned and groaned...til finally, my Parts Manager....literally took his arm...and went along side the top of the parts counter....and SWEPT all of the parts books/catalogs off onto the floor.... Mr. Asshole Customer...looks at him in utter SHOCK...(and me....I'm hidin around the corner nearly ready to pee myself...so damn funny).. and my boss says to the guy... "WELL...SINCE THEY'RE ALL THE SAME...I GUESS I DON'T NEED ALL OF THESE BOOKS....HERE YA GO"....(as he takes one off of the shelf...which of course.....IT IS THE WRONG ONE)..but see this guy all along kept sayin.."they're all the same...they're all the same"... So my boss sells him the wrong part....but before the man leaves...he makes him sign his receipt saying that HE WILL NOT GET A REFUND OR AN EXCHANGE..on that part.

WEll..guess what happened a day or so later...yep...here comes Mr.Asshat customer...mad as hell... the part is wrong...and of course he demands to see the parts manager... we go and get him...and my boss... My boss...is priceless... he says...oh, I see that this part you insisted was THE RIGHT ONE is now wrong...and it says here on your receipt...that you will get no refund or exchange...(he points it out...word for word...and points to the man's signature)....The asshole leaves... we crack up. Damn it was fun to get even with an ass customer.

One more quick one....lol... I'm working the counter at the Buick dealership I was at in '90/'91 somewhere around then...anyway....I'm working the retail counter to cover for the guy who normally works that side...it was lunchtime...anyway...this man walks in the door and says he needs a hood ornament.... I say...what kind of car do you have...he says..."it's white".... OMFG... I look at him...1 eye squinting like.....and in my head I'm thinking... I can't believe I just heard that. Duh...it's white. Some people...I tell ya....but you've seen it and heard it all too...haven't ya?.

OMG slide! that's great! I can totally see all af this!
I've been in dealerships off and on for 19 years or so. I've seen alot. But I've got one that's good enough to share with you here, but probably not good enough for a post.

We had a tech... we'll call him bubba... great guy, nice as the day is long... but dumber than headlight fluid. i mean, no common sense, could not remember anything. when he first started, he was asking the typical questions about where things are in the shop, how to work this, how to find that (on the computer)... then he'd turn around two hours later and ask the same person the same question. and the next day, same question. next week, same question. anyway....

he was diagnosing a ticking noise in an SUV that he had looked at twice in the last month. both times, he just kinda did the bare minimum to get by, and shipped it. this time, it came back in with a loud knock. the "time to replace the motor" kind of knock. the customer had a service contract and the advisor had already gotten the authorization to pull the motor and disassemble for diagnosis.

well ole bubba wasn't the kind of tech who had the time or the skill for that big of job. so, he pulled it in his stall, knocking like a steel drum. me and another tech, a good friend of mine, are standing at the aisle near the edge of our stalls. (we were in opposite corners of the shop, and bubba was in another corner across from him.) we looked at bubba, and then each other, smiling mischeviously. then bubba put his foot to the floor revving the motor to about 5000 rpm and instantly blowing a rod through the side of the block with a loud "bang". we looked at each other and started laughing hysterically. I yelled down to my buddy "did that crazy fucker just do what i think he did?" he nods back yes as he's laughing, doubled over. about that time bubba yells out for the whole shop to hear "hey, look at the hole! look man! it's big!"

I knew there was just too much fun to be had with this situation, and since i knew he was going to get fired (this was just the straw that broke the camels back) i went down to bubba and carefully analyzed the situation, with a more than serious look on my face.

i said "you know they have a service contract, right?"

he said "Oh, really?"

i replied "you're going to have to put a motor in it now, which will be over $3000.00 so they're going to have to send out a file handler to inspect it. when he comes out to look at this, he's going to realize pretty quickly that it no longer drives, right?"

he then says "yeah, so?"

so i told him "well don't you think that when he doesn't see a tow bill, he's going to figure out that the damage happened here?

Oh slide, let me tell you, i had the poor guy shitting bricks and sweating cow piss. he thought for sure he was going to get in big trouble. (he seriously had no idea that his job had been in jeopardy for the last 5 months.)

being the ass hole i am, i told everyone what was going on. including the senior service advisor, since our serv. manager was on vacation that week. he had fun with it too.

bubba ended up getting fired about 4 weeks later. and beleive it or not, the suv didn't leave the shop for another 4 months. it ended up getting 2 motors before someone got it right. but that's a whole other story.

HeHeHe....oh man. I'm surprised he lasted that long. Yep, I've seen a few of those types before... we had one tech...who happened to be the General Managers son....constantly "STONED"...lol...always, always f'k'n sumpin up. I wish I had a litte more time to tell you another story....and believe me I've plenty. I reckon we could use this one post you have here just for shop talk...'eh? I miss shop talk. Anyway...my Daughter, Son-in-law and my Grand Daughter...are in from CA.... so right now they've gone to see my mom...which is where I'm supposed to be headed to in a few. Have a good WEEKEND!

hey slide. saw your post on SJ's blog. I'm a little worried too. Have you seen anything that she's posted or commented on that would give any hint as to what's going on? She is such a dear woman, I'd hate to see anything bad happen to her?

No...I sure haven't. Just her last post and it is odd. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with holidays nearing....for a lot of people it usually starts in close to Thanksgiving...and last's til after New Years....when they are missing someone or other things are going on...and the Holiday season brings it out. I have a tendancy to get real sad and sometimes despondent myself at this time...and it's a struggle. Her husband died I guess 5 years ago...??? how or why I don't know. I'm guessing maybe car accident...but it could be tied to that. I hope it isn't something bad or real serious....and just maybe a 'bout of depression that will hopefully soon pass. Your right, she is a dear one. If you hear anything let me know...and I will do the same. Thanks...

thanks slide. I read it. I hope she just needs some HER time. I know what you mean about the holidays. I'm not a big fan of the holidays myself, but I don't go through nearly the pain that some have to endure.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Do you get a 4-dayer, or do you have to work on friday? we're open, and I'll probably be there for at least 4-5 hours, but not all day. I can't work all day with a full belly!
