What's your sign -or- Name that Tune

She looked down at the speedometer, the ashes from her cigarette dangling from her marlboro light, ready to join the others on the floorboard of the small hatchback. "Damn!" she says, knowing that 55 mph is only going to give her about 45 minutes at her destination.

She pulls the sun-visor down, checking her make-up. Still looks the same as it did 4 minutes ago.

The high mileage 3-door has made this trip numerous times, but the highway looks cold this time. Not cold like the six-pack in the passenger seat, but a cold that is uninviting and eerie. The kind of cold that is familiar to her at home.

62 mph. That's better. She sees the sing on the shoulder that warns drivers of the detour to come. It says "Bridge Out", and she thinks to herself that it has been up for seven months now. Shouldn't they be done with that damn thing?
If she could use that bridge, it would take 18 minutes off her commute to the small two bedroom ranch in Morton Flats.

She thinks about the last trip she made here. The anxiety she felt on the way, and how she was turned on by the "forbidden" factor of it all. How she felt like a teenager sometimes, checking her jeans, thinking "Does this shirt go okay with this?" The pre encounter excitement always seem to be paramount to the post orgasmic disappointment she usually felt the following morning.

She pushes buttons on the radio looking for some background music that goes with the cold look of the highway and its surroundings. Another look in the mirror to ensure that her make-up hasn't somehow become smudged in the 4 miles she's just traveled.

"Bridge Out" she thinks to herself, as she lights another cigarette with the pink Bic lighter. It's just a sign. A 4x4 wooden post with a chunk of sheetmetal and some paint on it. "What good is that?" she thinks to herself. 62 mph. Looking good.

"Oh shit!" she thinks, seeing the odometer and realizing that she's now 1700 miles over due on her oil change. "I could use that as an excuse next time!" she thinks. "Hey honey, I'm going to get the car serviced. I'll be back around 10:30 tonight." And just as quickly realizing that won't work. Who services cars that late at night? Besides, what will she then say when she really does get the oil changed?

That sign. What was so important about that sign tonight? This time it was the messge that it delivered. "Your car isn't going to make it to the other side of the river this way."

Another look into the mirror. She looked at her own eyes and saw that "forbidden factor" reflecting back at her through the smoke from her now half burnt cigarette.

She pulls up in front of the small home and thinks silently about the bones that are filling her closets. She amazed herself at how she could keep all the stories straight sometimes. The falsehoods in her life now becoming the norm. And as she sees the front door swing open and the kitchen lights in the back of the house flowing through the front door, shrouding the silhouette of her lover, she thinks of this place now as being an escape route from the bones that will fly when the closet door is opened unexpectedly.

She puts out her smoke in the ashtray and checks her reflection in the mirror one last time before grabbing the six-pack and her purse.

"I was wondering if you were going to make it. What took you so long?" he asks.

"Let's go. I've only got about an hour, and I want to have time for a beer when we're done.

Nope. The pic doesn't really go with the song at all. It's not country, either. (I hate country)

"Self proclaimed" probably isn't as big a problem as "my writing". Or maybe my interpretation. So glad to see you here today DT. I've missed ya. Hope you had a great holiday weekend.
