Smo (aka Bambi),

So we have something in common - we read hounyhole's blog (as does just about everyone else)...

I stopped by to see who you were. Your blog about JFK and the effect he had on Superman comics... Had someone mentioned that topic to me at a coctail party, I probably would have laughed. You, however, presented a clear, concise, and logical argument detailing the effects. I'm impressed (not that you have to impress me).

As for Hunyhole. You took exception to my comment about sports teams using "Indians" as mascots. You have a point, I have a point, and it is a close call (in my opinion). Nonetheless, it is "bad form." We haven't named a sports team after LIVING Caucasians groups (the Vikings don't count), we don't do that to the Mexicans, the blacks, or the Asians... so why the Native Americans?

Anyway, enough on that topic. I invite you to stop by my blog and leave a comment (so I know you've visited). I'll keep coming by yours.

Its been nice meeting you.

Lady Bambi

Thank you for the flattering commentary... I was particularly proud of my JFK post (it's one of my favorite personal stories) and was becoming dismayed that it had drawn fewer views and comments than my stupid log of jog assignment posts. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Glad I got through to somebody.. I figure most everyone here is too young to appreciate anything about Kennedy (or too conservative).

One last reply on the subject of mascot names, and then I promise to quit:

mascot names seem to fall into four categories--1) animals (or birds, or fish), 2) vocations, 3) regional references, or 4) indeterminate icons

examples: 1) Cubs, Blue Jays, Orioles, Devil Rays, Cardinals, Marlins, Rams, Seahawks, Diamondbacks, Tigers

2) Padres, Brewers (see # 3), Pirates, Rangers, Mariners, Cowboys, Vikings, Clippers

3) Angels, Twins, Yankees, Rockies, Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Lakers, (Trolley) Dodgers, 49ers

4) White Sox, Red Sox, Giants, Astros, Redlegs, Royals, Athletics,

To my mind, the American Indian references combine a litte of #s 2, 3, and 4, and I just don't see that any of the above are demeaning to any of the subjects they reference... My list could certainly be more inclusive, but I was limited to baseball teams, and the stuff that I could pull up off the top of my head.. (And quite honestly, I think a lot of the above qualify as "Living Caucasian groups", and there is at least one mascot name of "Aztecs")

Last word, and then I'm done... native Americans, if nothing else, definitely count as "regional references", and there are clearly lots of other examples of those above.. that's why there are no black or Asian mascot name. I'm not sure that there might not be other Mexican (or Hispanic) references somewhere....
