things I never knew about chocolate

I'm learning all kinds of things about chocolate from the Purple Turtle. She's taking chocolatier classes.

We've decided that Grand Marnier is probably the best liqueur to enjoy with chocolate.

Here are a few interesting facts:

Most American chocolatiers use 56% cocoa or less. European chocolatiers use more than 56%, which makes it seem more luxurious to me.

The "snap" is important, when you break the chocolate.

When nuts are used in chocolate making, the chocolate has a very specific shelf-life.

The Purple Turtle told me a story about working in an office building some years ago. An enterprising man put a little concession stand in the building, and one of the things he sold was chocolate bars.

One day one of the workers in the building was eating a chocolate bar with nuts and happened to look at the half-eaten bar as he was munching. A frightened little worm was waving at him from inside one of the nuts.

"Don't eat me, Mr. Monster Man!" said the little worm.

The man promptly tossed his cookies all over the lobby of the nice office building.

The moral of the story is:

always look to see what the sell-by date is when purchasing chocolate with nuts. I don't know why little worms start to live in nuts, but they do.

Here are a few questions to choose from:

If you are a guy: what is the significance of chocolate when you want to bag a bunny girl?

If you are a girl: do you self-medicate with chocolate when bunny boy says "good bye?"

When is the last time you barfed in a public place?

Have you ever spread chocolate over nuts and then licked them?

Thank God I don't eat that stuff

A guy doesn't need to use chocolate on me

I don't self medicate with chocolate....but maybe something else to make me feel good

When I was in the second grade I hurled in the classroom. I will never forget the kid who laughed at me and what he looked like.

Yes, chocolate is very good spread over nuts...as well as a few other tasty things.

I like chocolate well enough, but I'm certainly not a chocoholic like many seem to be.. most of the time I can take it or leave it. If asked my choice of ice cream flavors, most of the time I'll respond in favor of chocolate, unless the choice of flavors includes something exotic that really catches my imagination....

Last time I hurled in public was at Magic Mountain... I'd done Freefall, the attraction where they secure you into a cage and drop the cage over the edge of a tower. For a certain length of time, you are accelerating in a freefall state, then, just before the cage hits the ground, the cage follows a track parallel to the ground, and all of that momentum is moved sideways. I enjoy this experience, usually. But this time I came off of it not feeling very well. We decided that I just needed to eat, so we went into one of the restaurants there and ordered dinner.....I was right in the middle of the meal when suddenly, without warning, I vomited all over the table. I went to the rest room to clean up, while the wife stayed while restaurant staff came to clean up the table. She apoligized to them but was assured that that kind on incident happens all the time there.....

Except for peanuts, I don't care for nuts in chocolate.

Now fudge falls into a different category... I can never resist fudge, unless it has nuts in it.....

It's also important to read the ingredients on the packaging, don't you think? I tend to avoid the chocolate bars, which contain "worm-inhabited nuts."

Another to add to my list of poorly conceived marketing strategies: "New and improved Hershey's, now with worm-inhabited nuts!"
