Buddy, can you spare a dime?

I have mixed feelings about panhandlers.

Today, I gave a panhandler fifty cents. Somedays I just walk by. Some days I might give a dollar.

I once lived in an artsy neighborhood in Tucson, Arizona where there was a nest of homeless people. Some of them were very arrogant, demanding and rude. They would piss on your doorstep and peek in your window and masturbate. For a long while, I never gave money based on that experience.

Now, I try to be more expansive in thought, but I have to be in the right mood in order to give money to a panhandler.

I do believe in the principle "as you give, so you shall receive" and often wonder if I might not run into a panhandler who is an angel in disguise.

What do others think about panhandlers? Do you always give money? Do you never give money?

I was eating dinner in the heart of Philly on a business trip with my boss at a Chinese dinner about 10 years ago. The boss, being the lightweight he was, couldnt finish his food so he opted to doggie bag it and take it back to the hotel. On our way there was this panhandler asking for money for food. Big young white dude with long curly hair. I usually ignore them unless they "touch me", but my boss, honestly trying to do a good thing, offered up his food to the guy who just said "fuck you" back. My boss immediately got in his face and I just put my arm around him and walked away with him.

I give paper$ to those who look in dire need. I will go by and give eye to eye sneer to those who got a scam going, and they know I know....particularly in Balt. city.

I have to admit that based on the same fear that I may be passing by an angel in disguise, I always give what's in my pocket. If I have nothing, I feel no guilt in saying so, but if I do, it's theirs. Maybe it is upheld Catholic guilt. Or maybe it is just a weakness for those less fortunate. Either way, I think that you and I are among a blessed few who do give for reasons other than "just to have them us alone".
