Wahoooo, true speed!!

Today, I get broadband!!! Kiss that old dial up good bye!!!

I have been waiting so long to take the plunge. That I am just chomping at the bit to take off!

As Magahee would say, "Damn, now my porn will load SOOOO much faster!! " But now I really hope to be able to go into chat rooms, and see some of you great people face to face with a web cam. Now, hold on!!!! Don't all rush at me at once!!!! As someone just told me the other night, "I really hate that white sheet in that picture!" LOL!!! I want to web cam, but need to get one. So, that may be a week or two with finances the way they are. AND I only plan on camming my FACE!!!!! Sorry, I know. You are all disappointed in me. But that is just how I want it, right now.

So, any comments on types of web cams? Does it really matter? And what wonderful things should I be doing with my computer, now that I have SPEED??

Mav, a whole new world!

One thing you want to be aware of with a web cam is: How much RAM does the cam require to run efficiently???

Lots of fairly new computers only have 256M of RAM in them and many web cams require 256M of RAM.
If you are running Windows XP it tends to consume about 170M of RAM all by itself. That doesn't leave much RAM for your web cam to operate properly.

Your cam will still run, but in a very inefficient manner. Since most cams operate at 30 frames/second the lack of RAM can cause this constant "frame" updating to become slow, jumpy, grainy, etc.

What happens is that your PC will sense the RAM issue and will start using empty space on your Hard Drive as temporary memory. This is called "virtual memory" or a "page file". The CPU is constantly writing and deleting data in that area of your hard drive and this is one of the main issues of poor video quality of a lot of web cams.

The bottom line is that you MAY want to consider more RAM for your PC if you only have 256M.

If you need more info drop me an email.

I have a Mac G4 with 512 of Ram. Thanks for the reference to look at that when buying a cam. I will do so.

hiya newengland..
Wow.. never knew that Cams need that much of memory. Now i can trouble shoot the reason why my Kensingtom Cam keeps shutting down my pc whenever i plug it in...
Thank you.
Will look into PCs RAM again.
