Sex Education, Yours?

Well, I got to thinking the other day about current sex education classes, and are they really helping. Hearing that the current form of "birth control" is oral sex. WTF, are they teaching them!!

I did see a current report that teen pregnancy is going down. Must be all that oral sex!!!!

My big talk, from my parents, consisted of giving me a book to read. That was it!!! I have no idea if it was any different for my younger sister. She was definitely the wild one. Then I was on my own.

So, how did you learn about the birds and bees? From the parental units, friends, etc. And for the parents out there, how did you have the 'TALK', and how old was the child? Do you think the kids these days are getting any of the right answers from sex education at school?

Mav, just remembering growing up

I used to work on a small farm when i was younger, with my sister. We loved it.

This was our first viewing of procreation. We often came home armed with questions about the things animals did & so on.

Mum just explained it in a matter of fact way & said humans are pretty much the same.

I didnt learn of contraception though, i learnt about that in sex ed in school.

Ive been the opposite with J, as soon as she turned 9 i gave her a book on periods & sexual activity. Asked her to read it & ask me questions when she was comfortable.

Over a 2 year period i was asked questions. She was fully prepared for her period when that started & also new she may experience cramps. I never expected that so thought i was dying.

Last year she started asking more questions about sex & std's. She also wanted to see what a condom was like.

Im hoping she is very clued up & hoping this will prevent accidents & peer pressure.

Forwarned is forarmed. Id hate to see her experiment with sex & become pregnant & have to put her career & education on hold.

I know a day will come when she will want to have sex with a boyfriend & im pray she will feel relaxed enough to come to me & ask to be put on the pill & also to have condoms.

I'm afraid my education came from my mums best friend at a very early age.
Oh, well. Shit happens

I had a talk from my dad, and a demo but that's something I talk about somewhere in my blog. The talk was pretty vague and I don't think is was very helpful. I believe I learned the important things from discussions with my friends. Sex ed in the 50's and early 60's in school was virtually nonexistent.

My mom read a book with me. I can still remember that book. But I spent alot of time on my relatives dairy farms too...and when I asked questions about what the animals were doing, they always answered me matter of factly. So, I understood that part of it. I wasn't overly fascinated by the animals....just kind of took it as part of life.

Hey Mav,

My introduction to sex ed was the day of my wedding, YUP, terrifying! My mother said during the reception, "It's going to hurt". OMG did it ever hurt!
With my children. I taught them early on...gradually and discussed things as what they were able to understand. By the time they reached grade 7 which is the grade Sex Ed are taught, their teachers were darned amazed at what they knew. It was no mystery, no shame just matter of fact stuff.
It had an impact on my chldren for one b'day of mine when she was 12 years old, her gift to me was a contract she had written on her own saying, she would wait to have sex when she really loved or liked the boy and that she would tell me near that time so we could make proper precautions. It was an unbelievable gift.
I carried that contract in my wallet as she asked me to do. She did this on her own. We talked openly always.

I can't remember being taught anything by my parents, but I equally don't remember ever being in a position of not knowing the birds and the bees. Given their general preference to tell us stuff early, I'm guessing they must have told me so early I don't recall the conversation.

My older boy is 7 and my younger one is 5. Both of them know the basics, the older one far more than the basics (ever heard a 7 year old biy explain periods to an adult? It's hilarious!). I'm proud of the fact that when this sort of stuff gets talked about in the playground, it will be my boys giving out the accurate information.

I can't understand parents in our town who object to the fact that the kids are going to start sex education at 8. My objection is not to how early they start but how badly it is taught. There is no point at all in teaching the simple logistics without including it within the setting of relationships and the emotional significance of sex.

Fancy being taught about oral sex as a method of birth control! Wish I'd known about that years ago!!!!!

Blogito ergo sum.

My mom's canned sex talk is this, "I'm gonna tell you exactly what my mother told me before I got married... Not a damn thing!"

I learned all my early impressions on the school bus (they weren't very "right" I've since discovered).

My sex education came from living on a military base with a bunch of GI's and overhearing inappropriate conversations about sex from them and from inappropriate behavior from adults. Niether of these ways is good sex education and they didn't provide sex education when I was in school.

Yup...this juiciness is from me....

Hmmmm, harder than expected to learn. That would be a very difficult environment to survive in. Thanks for sharing.

I started reading Jackie Collins, Harold Robbins and Sydney Sheldon books when I was 7 years old. As a result, I knew quite a bit about sex as I was growing up. Nobody ever actually sat me down to talk about it.

Now, my son is now 9. He's starting to say things that make me realize he knows more than I thought. We shall be discussing things pretty soon....lord help
