Gardening - Update

I also started a small orchard, trees planted within the past 3 or 4 years. I'm waiting for them to mature enough to bear fruit. They get pestered by rabbits and deer.

Caressmewell, you mentioned you had a koi pond. What suggestions do you have if I were to build a small pond? I'm in the northern climes which limits the type of vegetation and fish that I could have in the pond.

 I've heard that using blood meal on and around plants will stop the deer and rabbits. It will have to be reapplied after heavy winds and rain.

Yes, I have a 10' x 13' koi pond and the fish overwinter quite well in the southern climate. For your climate you have several options, an electric pond heater and a aerating nozzle, both will allow you to overwinter the fish in the pond. I would discuss this with a store/company that sells/installs ponds in your area or even try your local exchange office to get more information.

 Caressmewell and Flyaway, the bloodmeal does deter rabbits and deer. My problem then becomes raccoons. Those critters will dig up at night anything I plant during the day if I use bloodmeal. Those @$%&%@$& varmints!

Katsback, sorry to hear about your koi pond problems. Are you back up and running with a new pond?

 Good Luck! With your garden...I have pescky rawbits that eat the 'new sprouts'...maybe I should give the bloodmeal a try too.
