LYING: a hard habit to take

-Lynyrd Skynyrd

Operation Iraqi Liberation, the original title of the Pentagon's working plans for the military invasion of Iraq and the removal of Saddam Hussein from power, was abandoned at the behest of the Bush White House. Concerns regarding the very real possibility that military brass and pundits would create an acronym from the phrase immediately usherd a name change. It would have proven far too dangerously close to the truth to refer to the casualties as veterans of O.I.L.

-Bullwinkle The Moose

Suddenly, like magic, Operation Iraqi Freedom was born. And O.I.F. has become a very expensive child, already having cost U.S. taxpayers more than $400 billion. Accounting for hidden costs of reconstruction, resupply of military machines, stores and ammunition, government service contracts to third parties, long-term medical care services, compensation and survivorship benefits, added recruitment bonus costs, and the ACTUAL EMPLOYMENT OF FOREIGN MERCENARIES, we're probably pushing half a trillion dollars here.

-Hannibal Lechter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

Just so you can comprehend the latter part of the previous statement, allow me to inform you that your military is now paying members of the Ukraninan Army $1,500.00 per month to remain in Iraq. Personally, I call that being a member of The Coalition Of The Willing To Get Paid.

The President of Georgia, a former state in the Soviet Union has been paid $1 million a month for the continued presence of his troops in Iraq. Other nations were paid lump sum amounts prior to the invasion, and yet still others are receiving special foreign aid packages and sweetheart trade deals to remain in Iraq.

The legal term, "quid pro quo", translates from Latin as "this for that". In other words, I scratch your back and you send your nation's children to die on the killing floor. But hey, perhaps we are merely witnessing the truest meaning of GLOBAL FREE TRADE IN THE NEW WORLD ORDER.

-Myra Langtry in THE GRIFTERS

By the way, when I talk to my government about this, so that I can try to get some reasonable cost estimate for O.I.F, noone seems to know exactly who might have that kind of information. Hey, my Senators can't even get a straight answer from the State Department. (see pic)

Meanwhile, the military attache at the Ukraninan Embassy hung up the phone on me after he found out that I wasn't a reporter. He wasn't interested in offering a confirmation OR a denial. Military personnel DO NOT DO THAT UNLESS they are restricted from telling a lie, and at the same time, also restricted from revealing the truth.

So...if you want the number for the prick at the Ukranian Embassy, just post a request in comments, and I'll go find it for you. I think I'm going to tell him that I'm Hunter S. Thompson with the Rocky Mountain Front next time I call.

I'm still shaking my head as to how Bush could be elected again (will be for the next 3 years, maybe more).

By the way, it was Annette Benning(?) in the Grifters.

You are so-o-o-o righ. Annete Bening portrayed the character Myra Langtry in the 1990 film. Thanks for the comment and the correction.

p.s.-I would thoroughly enjoy spending a lot more than just an hour appreciating the full-bodied, cross-your-heart symphony that resides within your purple lace brassiere, and I certainly would not need any glasses!

In the immortal words of Dave Chappelle, "That is correct." Annette Bening did portray the sultry Myra Langtry in this dark drama from 1990. How could I have been so stupid? Thank you for the comment and correction.

p.s.- And purple is so-o-o-o your color!
