Holocaust cartoon fair

OK, I realize that this is a very sexual website in general, and I was hoping to keep any blogs or posts to things having to do with sex or relationships. But I can't. Not with this little gem out there, looming over me like a burqa'd vulture ...

Iran is hosting a Holocaust Cartoon Fair.

Yup, it's in response to the Mohamed cartoons that caused quite a stir a while ago. As the organizer put it:

"We staged this fair to explore the limits of freedom Westerners believe in," Masoud Shojai, head of the country's "Iran Cartoon" association and the fair organizer, said.

"They can freely write anything they like about our prophet, but if one raises doubts about the Holocaust he is either fined or sent to prison," he added.

Now, I don't know about you, but I know plenty of people who've made fun of the Holocaust ... Hell, I'm one of 'em, and I was raised Jewish. No-one I know of has ever been fined or arrested for doing so. I've also met people who portrayed the Holocaust as a large-scale Jewish plot - and you know what? I just shake my head and let 'em say it ... following the immortal words of Evelyn Beatrice Hall, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Now, look at his words about Mohamed ... "they can freely write anything they like about our prophet." When we tried that, a wave of destruction followed ... embassies were firebombed, people were killed, etc. In other words, we CAN'T freely write about their prophet for fear of causing widespread death and mayhem.

I'm very curious what will happen, though. If, as I expect, a resounding LACK of reaction occurs, will that incite more provocations since they will then see the west as cowards, unwilling to defend their faith? If, by some strange chance there IS a reaction, will they increase their provocations saying we're hypocrites?

Is there any way that this can't be skewed against us by Iran?

You know, if I were in charge of the American Jewish Committee or one of the plethora of other Jewish organizations out there, I'd send in 10 or 20 good cartoons satirizing the Holocaust, done on the Jewish Committee's official stationary, just to prove that we DO have a sense of humour about our history and that we can not only accept contrary opinions, we can do so with a smile. That'd be sure to chap their hides ...
