New PC, not necessrily better...

So, I saved my money and bought my new laptop. Yaaay. However...

Is anyone out there familiar with the bathtub curve? I am. I work in IT, and until one year ago, was an "actual" IT consultant. Of course, all this means is that I know a little more than the average man on the street, and in some cases, more than the average IT Help Desk Technician. (Yes - it's true!)

So, there i was, working on a new machine, with new software, and blogging and chatting away etc, when a new gremlin struck.

I had some sort of technical problem, so I had to reboot. WHen I rebooted, it would not restart. I tried rebooting last known good config, normal, and safe mode. None would work.

When i went into the recovery console, it said that Windows XP was not installed on my machine. D'OH.

I have not yet made a backup of my data, and have a sneaky feeling there is a hardware error. CRAP!

Never mind - this too will be sorted out in time. I hope...

Sounds pretty bad to me. I'd pull that drive and install on a different one. Add your data drive later as another drive. Pull the data...and start all over again.

If it becomes a real problem you can buy an external hard drive enclosure for next to nothing. Pull out the hard drive and put it in the enclosure. Then it will work like an external USB hard drive and you can copy your data off it, before they reformat it !!!

Zacly! I tell you - all computers are inventions of the devil. But we cannot do without them, can we?

Thanks - I will do just that. *Holding thumbs*

Oh nooooo. No internet! That bites. Sorry about the little ankle biters who crowd you. That sucks. I hate internet cafes pricesely because of that.

Hope you internet is fixed soon.

Thanks - I will do that, I have not yet been able to make a backup, so that will be very helpful.

Ha ha. I knew you would say that.
Trouble is, if this had happened to my MAC, there would be no one round to help me, and taking it back for repair would be one helluva problem.

But okay, I will admit - you MAY have a point.

Ahh computers, always such a pain. Can't live with em, can't stick your cock in the DVD drive.

Or something like that.

I can't even write for more than 5 minutes with a pen anymore. Sad.

waggy - yes.

the theory is that a PC will either brak within a very short time, or only after a very long time. Generally speaking.

I usually get the ones that break almost immediately...
