I am not gay!

Switching things up a bit here. Wanted to tell a little story about when I left my hometown of Seattle to go to San Francisco back in 1985. You can make up your own minds, but I swear I am not gay.

I had just turned 20 and a friend of mine was in the marines, stationed at Fort Ord. Big strapping guy, surfer and fit. Suddenly has a heart attack out of nowhere and is sent to The Presidio in San Francisco which had an Army Hospital on it. While he got better, the forces seemed a little slow in re-processing him so let him come back to Seattle for a visit and he drove up.

He and I and the gang partied for a few days and when the time came due for him to return I made a spur of the moment decision to accompany him and make sure he was ok on the drive back and then would return home later.

We arrive back to SF and The Presidio. He is officially to be kept in the hospital as the forces have still not figured out what exactly to do with him. I'm broke and brought little money. The next week I spend with him posing as military on the base. I cut my hair short, learn shoulder insignias and appropriate military salutations and protocol.

He gives me an extra chow card and through acquaintances I find lodging on base during this time. I even get woken up one night sleeping in the back of the truck by the MP's on base, but I had partied with one of them a few nights before so they went on their way.

At the end of a week or so, he is finally re-assigned to Fort Ord and I decide that I really like SF. So I hunt for a job and find one as a waiter at Houlihan's on Fisherman's Wharf. I work a day and as I'm commenting to the Host that I'm looking for a place to stay, he offers that I can stay with him and his roommates until I find something. Now, I'm not naive... I know he is gay, but this is SF and I'm an open guy. What harm could come? I agree and move my things to his place.

Just so happens that his place is located on the main street of the Castro District, which is SF gay central. Second story flat above a restaurant with not a female in sight. He makes advances on me which are thwarted effectively. 3rd night in, I fall asleep on the couch watching TV and I wake up with one of his roommates undoing my fly. Time to move.

So, learning my lesson. I agree to move into a two bedroom flat with Joe. A waiter at the restaurant. He lives alone and is flamboyantly gay. Prissy gay. Lives just above Castro District. I move in and we end up having great fun together.

He plays "Divine" movies for me. I help him shoot a video clip in his backyard to be shown at a club. The clip is done to the music of Patti Labelle. He has a second job doing gay phone sex which is in the early days of phone sex. Perfectly normal experiences.

I end up moving into another flat on Union and Steiner with a strait guy after about a month with Joe. Where I stay until I meet my wife, also at the restaurant.

In between leaving Joe's place and meeting my future wife, I attempt to attract and be with every women possible. This certainly proves I am not, nor ever was gay, bi or curious... despite my story.

Everyone else focused on the gay thing and I was walking down memory lane at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. I think every school in the Central Valley took a trip to S.F. or Monterey just to forget that we lived in crappy Fresno. Ugh! I am SO not looking forward to my mandatory visit to that smog enfested hell hole this Sept. Yuck!!

I lived in NorCal for 32 years, was born in Hayward... spent a lot of time goofing off in San Francisco on the cable cars, hanging out at the wharf .... it's still my favorite place in the entire world and my dream is to some day be able to move back and live right in the heart of the city (I'd settle for the Berkley Hills though, with a vew of the bay) .... btw, I was just getting over the fact that you are *not* gay when the brilliant shade of your pink font hit me... I love that you are so in touch with your feminine side ... I could really use a pedicure, you game?

Apparently the depth of depravity here is bottomless... don't you feel right at home?

What a great experience! I ran an art-related business for 14 years, so gay men are very near and dear to my heart (if nothing else). I think every straight guy should spend some extended time in a gay community. Knowing what it's like to be on the receiving side of male attention make us better, more respectful lovers to the women in our lives (not to mention better dressers!) If it weren't for my mischievous gay friends and their unsuspecting bar-buddies, I don't really think I'd know a thing about flirting. Besides, gay men are fun to hang with simply because they party like vikings! It's a pity we don't see more action from them here in mainstream blogsville. Their input would be a lot of fun.

So, ARE you gay? Do I care? If so, why? Perhaps these questions should be put off until we meet in person. Given the things that only women stir in me (and my, do they stir!), I consider myself straight, but not at all narrow...

That story really proves to me you're an open-minded guy. Many hetero guys wouldn't go NEAR that situation.
I'm impressed...good for you Ger.
