A Little Story

I met a couple a while ago. They were in their 70’s and had been married for almost fifty years.
I was sitting there and he struck up a conversation with me. He was sitting in the waiting room, waiting for his wife. He began to talk about her and I enjoyed speaking with him for a while. I asked him what it was like being married to someone that long. He told me that there had been many trouble spots in their marriage. There were a few times that they had almost parted company. He said that they always worked it out and he was glad for it. With weepy eyes, he said that he would never want to be without her. His wife came out and he stood up and walked over to her and kissed her on her forehead.
She asked me if her husband had been boring me with his stories. I told her “No”, that he was a very interesting man. She told me how long they had been married and that she was lucky to have him. She said that she still loved him as much as when she married him. She was glowing when she spoke of him and it was obvious that she really did love him. They walked out of the oncology dept of the hospital hand in hand, very much in love. One bent over little man, barely able to walk and his bald wife. Lovers to the end, I imagine.
