When it is decided to meet someone here, I ask to make it over a cup of coffee in a public place. Some here, as we all have found out, can be something less than honest about themselves and it is a safe way to see if you both have some common grounds, face to face. This online media offers many different types of people, looking for many different things for different reasons and that is a wonderful experience.
But in the past from not knowing much about the other I was going to meet, there was much "dead air" in the conversations. If you have taken the time to set up seeing someone for the first time, also take some time before and ask some questions. Most are willing to answer any thing asked and if you go over a line in your questions, they will tell you.
If you are not sure what this person really looks like <for some, there is not a face shot or the one that is posted can be rather out dated> ask what are they driving. I told someone to meet me with a rose between his teeth. That way you have a general idea who you are looking for. In one meeting at a Waffle House, he told me that he had a grey small car. On arriving there, there was 6 small grey cars in the parking lot! Instead of coming out of the Waffle House, he sat there and watched me wait for him. It was not a promising beginning I can tell you.
Your first impresssion is important. It is that way in life in general. Clean, neat clothes and be who you are.
There are sometimes that you will not be right for each other, so bow out nicely, thank them for the coffee and their time and go on your way.
Hope you all well in all your future meetings and you never know, the next one may be with me.....

Coffee, thats interesting that we take two people who are a little hyped and maybe a little stressed about the coming possabilities and then add coffe to increase the hyper stress...LOL

OK, call me old-school, old-fashioned, whatever. Here goes. I've been to face-to-face first meets where the chemistry just didn't happen. But please, guys, if you invite a lady to meet you, I think it's common courtesy for you to pick up the tab, whether the chemistry happens or nor. Leaving a lady to pay for her own meal if you're not what she's looking for shows absolutely NO CLASS in my book.
