Wal*Mart :)

OK. So y'all know I hate Wal*Mart right? How, as an economist myself, I loathe them from an economics standpoint, and an aesthetic standpoint, and from social welfare and skewing values standpoints.

This post isn't that rant; the all-encompassing, thoroughly researched opus that I've been planning for months and which will deal a smarting blow to the happily jaundiced man and his box stores.

Naw, this rant is just about their music section.

I needed a couple CDs. You understand what I mean, yeah? There are times when I need a CD right fucking now (my doctor and I are working on ways to control these 'sodes). Given that Wal*Mart is the only store that carries music within 50 miles of me, I had to go there. (It was only my fourth time in a Wal*Mart, so I’m not gonna be all self-flogging about it.)

I needed NIN, Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, and Sloan - yeah, I was feeling furiously emo. I knew that Wal*Mart wouldn’t have everything, since they have a committee that meets with religious folk to find out what music really pisses off them off and they don’t carry it. I figured Trent Reznor had probably done something naughty, but I’d be able to get the others.

Nope. They got nothing for me. Absolutely nothing I would listen too. Then I turn the corner, and they have two ailes of COUNTRY & WESTERN!!!

Dear God, Beavis! Stop in the name of all that doesn’t suck!

This is not an exageration: I've seen much better CD selections laid out for sale next to toasters, televisions, and Beanie Babies on blankets by rasta dudes, and heroin addicts on St. Mark's Place. [Lower East Side, Manhattan.]

I left Wal*Mart so pissed and so quickly that security stopped to ask what was in my pockets; I told him that shite is still shite even when it’s free, and they got nothing I want to steal.

Dude must have known something about pharmaceuticals, because other than my wallet, all I had were the scripts I’d just filled next door, and he backed off and became kinda solicitous after reading the bottles.

Long story ending - Drove another 30 miles to Best Buy, dealt with friendly staff, and got ALL my music.

A few years ago, a friend of mine who is Born Again, but not insane, sent me a few MP3s of a so-called "Christian" band called Reliant K. Power pop, novelty songs, I liked it. Well, where to go to buy Christian music? I know! Wal*Mart!

So I got there... I found the Christian music section. For a Christian band, they seemed to warrant parental advisory stickers or something. All Wal*Mart had were the "edited versions" of the album I wanted. So, I wasn't about to get it, as I refuse to let a retailer dictate to me what I can or can't listen to.

So, I didn't get it. Nor did I find it elsewhere. And I had forgotten about it until your story. You're right. Wal*Mart's music selection does suck. In the area where I used to live, C&W music wasn't exactly popular. But Wal*Mart had a giant selection. As far as rock went, just a selection of Top 40.

I tend to go to Best Buy first anymore, as there are no indie record stores in my area. But even there, I don't find half of what I look for.

Great tale....it is not only wal mart that sucks but pretty much all of the big chains. You may have found your music at best buy(at least they are are smart enough to get that right), but try buying a camera there. Check out my recent post on this matter, you'll find it amusing. Don't you see the dumming down of the American consumer? The fucking strores try to tell us what we want. NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!!

Some pinko commie liberal you are! I have Never...read...Never been in a Wal Mart my entire adult life.

Going to visit my grandma, who worked there, as a kid doesn't count. I was too young to know any better.

yeah, I agree, I don't like wal mart either. best buy does pretty well with prices as well. The other way around it is buying the music online or through mail, but these choices have their drawbacks and consequenses as well.

TexasMar - I suppose an argument could be made that C&W musicians are helping to keep health insurance out of reach for their fans, eh?

MissAnnThrope - same situation here. C&W is only popular enough to warrant a single radio station, and there aren't any indie stores.

Now St. Petersburg... more indie stores than you could shake a stylus at.

[blog rsp54] - or is it that the 67% of Americans within one SD of the mean are that dumb, and therefore dictate what we can buy?

frogger1995 - yeah, very proud of ya! (Why is it that because I'm neither evil nor insane, people just assume I'm a liberal?)

need2havfun76 - yep, or go to indie shop if you got a good one.

Stats never worked with my brain....so they can shove them standard deviations where the sun don't shine. I think I was called deviant once, though. Close enough! rose

VoodooGuru1 - The really sad thing is, they probably didn't have any good Country and Western. That reminds me ... I heard the worst song ever a few weeks ago on a country station around here. It was called "Drugs or Jesus" ...like those are the only 2 choices (or like those 2 choices are mutually exclusive).

Rowan_Taltos - yeah. The drug thing was a joke, but they do help when visiting China*Mart.

hourglasses - was it a serious song or a joke song like something Kinky Friedman would do? If it was serious, well, I guess that's a title that would work for that audience. You wouldn't want to get more specific with that demographic and sing, "Meth & Oxycontin or Jesus", or "Jack Daniels or Jesus Christ".

I wish I could live in a world as simple as their's.

Drugs or Jesus is a serious country song.

I prefer older country songs myself. Dolly, Kenny, Loretta, Conway, and then all the other older artists most folks probably don't remember.

Garth Brooks needs to just disappear.
"I'm a country music star!"
"I'm a baseball player!"
"I'm a ficticious rock star that got paid for a movie that will never be made."
"I'm retired from country music."
"I'm back out of retirement so I can do commercials for Wally World!"
