She Grinded Me With Science!

Couple items y'all should be aware of.

First, a new development in women's reproductive health, a subject the long-time reader will know is important to me; Plan B, the Morning-After Pill, or as [blog OhBaby199] calls it, "My Monday Morning Vitamin," has been approved for OTC sale.

You may recall in 2003 when an independent panel of scientists and physicians unanimously approved the drug for OTC sale, yet the Director of the FDA denied the move; this was the first time a panel's recommendation was overruled ever!

See, the Bushies and the Fundies wanted to keep the physician script requirement because it would promote promiscuity, or so they said.

Frankly, now that it is available OTC, I hope they're right! Sluts rock; America needs more of them, and fewer Fundies.

MORE SLUTS! LESS NUTS!!!

Since Plan B has to be taken within three days of believing the guy would pull out, requiring a visit to the doctor before you can get it kinda hampers its efficacy.

So after three years of ridicule from the serious health sciences community, the FDA has given in. Sorta.

See, if you're under 18, you still need to go see your doctor and get a prescription. Or hang around outside a CVS and ask older chicks to score you some Plan B like it was a cheap 12-pack of Old Milwaukee.

The other development? Pluto's no longer a planet. Yep... 424 astronomers at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union in Prague voted it out we're back down to eight planets.

However, Republicans are wrangling to have the Supreme Court review the decision.

I love that--"More Sluts, Less Nuts!"

Perhaps we need to form our own non-profit:

The Society for the Protection of Sluts and Defilement of Nuts

How are ya gonna remember the planets now?? My very educated mother just served us nine... doesn't make sense. Maybe
"My very educated mother just served us nothing". "My very educated mother just sat under nuts"?

Poor Pluto. First he's a mute dog, now he's no longer a planet.

As far as Plan B goes, I WAS JUST ABOUT TO WRITE ABOUT THIS! Now I can't, or you'll accuse me of poaching your subjects again.

I've had to take it myself. The first time was very convenient, the condom broke, he was a doctor, by the time I got home the next morning, the prescription was waiting for me at the pharmacy. Another time, I was in the UK. It was OTC. I filled out a questionaire and was handed the pills. Trust me when I say, it sucks that it's the only form of birth control you can use when you have a family history such as mine.

While I didn't act hormonal taking them, one side effect I've noticed is, when you take them, no matter where you are in your monthly cycle, you're getting your period within the week. It will also be twice as heavy and last longer.

Yes, 16 year old girls are going to hang out outside CVS and ask someone else to buy the pills for them. Or if their parents are hip, they're going to get mom to do it. If mom isn't hip, an older friend. Which is going to lead to abuse of the product, really. One of the things I had to sign to both by prescription and OTC was I hadn't taken these pills in the last 30 days. It would seem taking them more than once a month can have some serious side effects.

But didn't you love what Wendy Wright said about this decision? "Statutory is a very serious problem. This decision is going to allow statutory to rely on this drug to cover up their abuse."

Christ. Statutory means she was willing and you were of legal age. It's just a way for a 15 year old girl's parents to have the boy she's fucking arrested on his 18th birthday.

This is, of course, assuming that the pharmacist is a heathen who hasn't exercised his God given right to refuse to carry them.

Damn. Ann took my Pluto line.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

I work for Planned Parenthood. A minor correction -- it's not truly OTC, shelved on Aisle 11 between the Trojans and the Tampax. It's BTC -- behind the counter. Asswipe pharmacists who think they have a God-given duty to serve Jesus as storm troopers in the Army of the Lord are still going to be able to refuse to dispense, or lecture, harangue, shame and otherwise act as a gatekeeper to keep women from getting their hands on it.

Oh, and hello again.
