Out of my way, you... I'm a motorist!

So, you guys know that I kinda like cars, yeah? And it usually follows that someone who likes cars also likes driving. This is certainly true in my case; I mean, why would I search the country to find one of the few hundred Volvo wagons with a manual transmission if I didn't?

But as likely as you are to find me driving at twice the legal speed, you're twice as likely to find me paying attention to safety and courtesy to other drivers. I always use my turn signals, even for a lane change, I don't ride the left lane, and on the rare occurrance that someone is driving faster than me, I immediately pull right to let them pass. I flash trucks to let them know they can change lanes, unlike [blog OhBaby199] who flashes trucks to let them know she's a big ol' ho.

Most importantly, I always have my lights on at dawn, dusk, and especially when it's raining so cars in front and behind me can see me. It also helps others judge how bad visibility is and gives clues as to what the road is doing ahead of them.

Then there are those selfish bastards who don't.

I'm not talking about drivers who simply forget... a quick flash of highbeams reminds them and they turn their headlights on. No, I mean those who don't give a fuck about you or me, the ones refuse to turn their headlights on even in the densest fog.

I'm talking about SUV and pick-up drivers.

Most SUVs & pick-ups do have their lights on in this situation to be sure, just like the rest of us. But those that don't turn them on, and refuse to after reminded are almost always SUVs and trucks, and I have empirical data to support this assertion.

On a rainy drive, I sometimes ask a passenger to count the number of vehicles with no lights coming from the other way, and I count only those that are SUV/trucks, or vice-versa. I did this yesterday with my nef in all the rain we're getting from Ernesto, and in a 45 mile drive, there were 37 cars with no lights... 33 of which were either an SUV or pick-up.

So why is this so? Why do SUV drivers behave like selfish bastards at such a disproportionate rate? Is it stupidity? I mean, do they think that saving their headlights for nighttime only will somehow extend the life of their batteries?

Nope. I've given this much thought, and I think that it's merely a case of adverse selection. I could best explain this with a Venn diagram, but it's like this.... There exist in the world a certain proportion of selfish fucks, people who will cut in front of you in line for the teacup ride at Disney, people with twice the number of items in the supermarket express line, people who refuse to turn their lights on in the rain.

When it comes time to buy a car, by virtue of their misanthropy, these anti-socials are drawn to large vehicles with which they perceive they can bully others. So the logic isn't that all SUV drivers are selfish bastards, but rather, all selfish bastards drive SUVs.

I am here to offer testimony as to your superior driving ability.

But as far as your theory regarding SUV drivers, I'm not so sure. I always assumed it was the blunted "duh" factor that might cause both the purchase of SUVs in todays world and total cluelessness regarding the lights.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Very conscientious soon to be suv driver here. I have been told that I suffer from closet road rage, tho. Stupid drivers get under my skin. *Hey, I have kids here, you jerk! Did your car not come equiped with a turn signal? Mine did.*Imagine a few frills thrown in with that and ya have a good picture of me behind the wheel.

See, around here, it's vehicles that blend in with the road and sky that don't turn on their lights in bad weather. Mostly gray cars and SUVs. But those in black trucks or SUVs tend to do it too. Count the number of gray vehicles with no lights in the fog, rain or snow sometime.

I thought all of the newer vehicles came with automatic headlights so people could drive drunk more easily as well as not think about courtesy for other drivers?
