5 a.m.

Once, not so long ago, I was out driving. I was going down an exit ramp towards a busy intersection. the light was red, and my brakes went completely out.

The speedometer said I was going 97 miles per hour when I slipped through the space between the two cars. You could have barely slipped a credit card between the three of us.

There was a brief moment when I flew between those two cars. Just a second or three, no more. In that tiny space of time, my life could have ended right then and there. At the speeds we were going, I would have surely died, and probably taken a few people with me. I felt like a tiny mote of dust, being blown by a cyclone towards Death.

For that short, brief, terrorised and ecstatic instant, I felt truly and completely and totally alive.

I just read something last night that made something click inside me, and I'm not talking about that alien transmitter (hehe). It had something to do with the connection between the inner and outer levels of human experience. Basically, what it said was that to develop a communication with the inner, more attention needs to be paid to the outer. In your example, the closer we get to death, the more vividly we experience life. You are truly fortunate to have had such a vivid experience.
