World Cup 2006

Hi! Everyone, writing in to find out whats your views on the recent World Cup 2006 held in Germany.
Been watching the World cup ever since I was a school girl. Never miss the matches although it was telecast late into mornings (different time zone). But now the results and refreeeing have made me realized that its the fans that are taken fr a ride. To me, the best team did not win, which brings me to the next question : WHAT ARE THE CHAMPIONS WORTHY OF???

What does the World Cup Soccer proven or not proven? My views are that it is all bogged down to commercialism and we as fans lose out!!!! Sad sad sad!!!

Hi Sherielyn,

the best team did not win - I mean England were knocked out by Portugal !!

Right now I think that the champions whoever, they will be, are not worthy of anything !
.... all the good teams have already been knocked out !

Anyway, enough of football ! - that's a great picture of you !

It's a game, of course it doesn't matter. The whole point of it is for some rich team owner to stroke himself by having a world cup winner. Beyond that it's just a vehicle for commercial sponsorship, a way to make money. Same goes for all non-amateur sports. (and many amateur sports as well)

Shane, While I agreed that the best team didnt win, I beg to disagree that England is or was the best team in this tournament. Sorry to say, they were just lucky to even be in the quarter finals!!!

I must agree with Buddhamike that sporting events around the world today is not about sports only but $$$ but issue here today is why are the people all over the world still crazy about it?? Entertainment? Is it worth the time and money??

England didn't play very well I must admit !

People are crazy about football because it is entertaining !

From the entertainment perspective money is not a relevant consideration (unless you pay 400 Euro to watch a match, which I would never do) - the same is true about the olympics and almost any other " so called " amateur or professional sport.

In terms of time and money - I chose which football matches to watch so the time isn't important to me and it cost me nothing above the cost of a normal TV licence to watch the world cup.

I normally do not watch football but the world cup is an opportunity to be nationalistic but of course that could be the subject of a completely different debate !

Another debate could be the salaries of players and managers and corruption in Italian football but again this is a different debate !

I strongly believe that provided the players play for the love of football then it continues to be a real sport - I certainly believe that players like Beckham do not play because they get lots of money. If this was their motivation they could have left football as rich men a long time ago ....

Everyone in this world has the right to be successfull and make money (even the people involved in football !) - the question might be what they subsequently do with the money .... for example Bill Gates .... again, this is the subject of another debate ! Anything else I have fogotten ?
