First in war, first in peace, first in civility.

Quite unexpectedly, and completely unsolicited, a friend offered a link to George Washington's Rules of Civility. Quite the contrast with the common conduct of current society. And while I may not wish to conform to all (or, indeed many) of these rules, it is a most interesting window into civilized conduct and, likely, the underlying character of he who wrote (or at the very least adapted) these rules.

Eating habits change, and for some reason there is no mention of courteous use of a cell phone. But as in many things, what is critical is the 'attitude of the heart' behind any outward reactions. Among those of savage behavior, we may be required to act savagely. But among the civil, we should act with exceeding courtesy.
