What's Going On With This Summer and Happy 4th!!

First and foremost, Happy 4th of July to everyone who celebrates. I hope you all have an enjoyable day and I hope the weather is good for the majority of you!!

So where am I supposed to be right now? Sitting on the beach enjoying the gorgeous weather....but guess what? The weather sucks!!! I don't have a clue what is going on this summer but so far in New England the weather has been less than optimal for the beach. If it isn't raining or if we aren't having thunderstorms, then the humidity is impacting the beach and it is overcast and foggy!

I definitely hope this isn't an indication of what the summer is going to be like here!! I typically spend tons of time on the beach in the summer and that hasn't been happening much yet this year...not nearly as much as usual at least.

Well at least there is one upside to this whole thing. Since I was supposed to be basking in the sun all day today before the cookout I took care of everything I needed to do yesterday....potato salad, pasta salad, egg salad (yes I am definitely saladed out hehehehe), cupcakes, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, peeling corn and making a fruit salad...yep I was definitely busy yesterday.

Now I guess I get to chill until everyone arrives this afternoon for the cookout...thank God for awnings and canopies so we can still at least enjoy outdoor activities here at the house

I hope you all get to see some beautiful fireworks this evening!! Not sure what will happen here...guess we will have to wait and see what the evening weather brings but according to the weathermen it isn't supposed to be good Of course we all know how horrible the weathermen are around here...watch...the one time they are dead on with the forecast will be on 4th of July hehehe

Until next time!!

I try very hard in my life not to pass judgment on people but sometimes the stupidity of individuals make it impossible. I happened across a news clip a few minutes ago that absolutely made me sick to my stomach.

At age 6 a little boy was diagnosed with lymphoma and given a 90% chance of survival with chemo treatments in the hospital and chemo pills at home. It was as simple as having these treatments completed and he had an absolutely INCREDIBLE chance of survival and living a full life.

Come to find out his mother took it upon herself to miss his hospital chemo appointments and did not give him the chemo medication he was to be taking at home. The boy is now 8 years old and has barely a 10% chance of surviving the year let alone living a full life.

What on earth possesses a mother to neglect her 's treatments???????? I would without question give my life for either of my if it would save them if they were gravely ill.

According to the news clip, she has been arrested without opportunity for bail and will be brought up on charges. Unfortunately, whatever charges are brought up against her will never be enough to pay for what she has done to that innocent who had an incredible opportunity to survive!!!

It saddens and sickens me tremendously to think that a parent would be capable of such incompetence.

So last week I go to the salon for a haircut and it was time to have my roots done and a new foiling done (for those of you who don't know what foiling is, it is having highlights put in your hair). I typically only foil during the summer months to give my hair a little contrast for the warmer weather.

Anyway, I really thought I didn't need the foil, simply the root coloring (ya can you imagine I actually have grays!!! hehehe) but my hairdresser insisted that once he cut my hair the existing highlights would almost be completely gone. Of course being the person I am, I trust what he has to say and go with the flow.

Well, we go through the almost 4 hour process (yep can you believe it takes that long...heck it takes almost 2 hours just for him to put the foils on my hair since I have such thick hair). So when it is all said and done and he is about to start blowdrying I notice that it looks rather light all over my head which only means that when it is blown dry it will be even that much lighter. Now I am getting a bit nervous because I am a dark brunette and definitely have no desires to be a blonde or a light haired person in general.

Blow drying complete and he shows me the finished product. I am clueless what to say...my hair looks almost a uniform color throughout (not what is supposed to happen when you do foils) and it is LIGHT....and not even a light blonde...it looked orangish!!!! I almost died!! He claims he went a bit lighter for the summer to match with my skin tone and that it was caramel....I'm sorry I've had caramel highlights many times and this WAS NOT caramel.

He swears up and down that it looks great and matches perfectly with my skin tone...I of course am not convinced but decide I will come home and get other people's opinions.

First words out of my 's mouth...."Mom did you really want your hair to be orangish?" This was definitely starting out poorly!!! My younger , always the nice one, said it looked okay but she preferred my darker hair. My husband, always politically correct, said that if I liked it it was fine....which meant..."Honey it sucks!!!" I called the salon and spoke to my hairdresser and of course he became all irate because I was insulting his work. I told him that I rarely complain and that this was the second time he had done me wrong with my hair (we won't even get into what happened the last time!!! )

He was unwilling to rectify the situation....now mind you he and I have been friends outside of the salon for years and years....so it was very difficult for me to have to complain but I just couldn't take it. Of course his attitude only made the situation worse. I finally couldn't take it any longer and decided to go out and get my hair colored again....it is back to more of what I like no thanks to him and I stopped payment on my check (I decided it was unfair for me to pay $200 for something I was very unhappy with and that they were unwilling to rectify).

Today the owner of the salon calls me to tell me he was quite disappointed in the fact that I stopped payment on the check and asked why I hadn't called my stylist if I was unhappy. I now find out that my hairdresser told the owner that he doesn't know why I stopped payment and that he hadn't heard from me...talk about trying to cover his ass. I explained the entire situation to the owner and what transpired when I called to complain and he completely agreed that I should not have to pay for something I am not happy with (I give his salon a ton of business so he doesn't want to lose me as a ). He not only said that I did not have to pay for the service but my next hair service is also on the salon....I am switching so that the individual who does my nails will now be doing my hair as well....I am sure it will put a damper on my friendship with my current hairdresser but in all actuality what type of friend is unwilling to rectify the situation and then to lie to his boss to cover his butt....

At least my hair is back to a color I like and I don't feel so awkward being seen out in public....and it seems this "hairy" situation is now behind me hehehehe

Have a great day everyone and enjoy the weekend!!

The Unhealthiest Drink in America

I was reading the headlines this morning and came across this little tidbit that I thought was interesting, so I thought I'd share it with everyone.

The article discussed America's unhealthiest drinks...drinks that are providing us with nothing more than empty calories. It included items such as Glaceau Vitamin Water (130 calories and 33 grams of sugar) to Arizona Kiwi Strawberry Juice (360 calories and 96 grams of sugar).

The absolute worst drink in America today was astounding however. The winner is:

Baskin Robbins Large Heath Bar Shake (32 oz)

2,310 whomping calories
266 grams of sugar
109 grams of fat (64 g saturated)

As if just listening to those statistics is not enough, it is broken down further:

73: The number of ingredients that go into this milkshake.
66: The number of teaspoons of sugar this drink contains.
11: The number of Heath Bars you would have to eat to equal the number of calories in this milkshake.
8 - 12: The average number of minutes it takes to consume this drink (heck if you are going to be that decadent you'd think it would last longer).
240: The number of minutes you'd need to spend on a treadmill burning it off, running at a moderate pace.

I just found those statistics staggering!!! I don't know of any Baskin Robbins in our area and luckily I am not a fan of Heath bars so this is definitely not something I would order, but it just shows that we have to be so conscious of what we actually put in our mouths because food is filled with empty, worthless calories.

BTW, for the people out there who enjoy a frosty, summer pina colada now and again (which I admit I have indulged in more than once), you might think again...625 calories with 75 grams of sugar.

Well that's it from me for today. If you plan on getting one of those Heath Shakes, I definitely hope you truly enjoy it (and don't plan on eating anything else for the entire day hehehehe)

Pretentious Restaurants

I have always considered myself the type of person who enjoys nice things in life. I keep myself well maintained (pampered as my husband would tell you) and keep my house well maintained. When we go out for dinner we aren't much for the proverbial "fast food restaurants" and we like the nicer bars and pubs if that is what the evening brings.

I have to admit however, there comes a point where restaurants are just WAY too pretentious for my taste. Last night we went out with a couple of friends that we hadn't been out with in quite some time. They recommended Up River Cafe which is considered an American Bistro in Westerly (I am sure some of you Rhode Islanders will know of it). I had never been there before so of course was willing to give it a shot.

We arrive at the restaurant at about 8PM...it is right along the river in Westerly so I am sure during the day it is quite a lovely view. I couldn't see much at night however. You walk into the place and it is quite rustic in nature...the bar is immediately off to the right and there is a "hallway" that leads towards the restaurant area. Kind of reminded me of the inside of a ski lodge in some ways.

We were told it would be about a 15 minute wait for a table. We were actually seated 55 minutes after we arrived. That did not bode well with my husband of course since he tends to get very impatient when he has to wait that long to be seated. At this point I am thinking to myself that the food better be absolutely extraordinary after a wait like that.

The waiter arrives at our table and proceeds to offer us drinks and tell us what the dinner specials were. The dull roar of the crowd and the soft-spoken nature of the waiter prevented everyone except my husband from hearing the specials of the evening...it seemed this was definitely not starting out well. He also hands us menus which are kind of unique. It was two pieces of printed paper attached to a board (yes you read correctly...a board) with a type of twine.

The food on the menu ranged from the "pizza of the day" and/or a hamburger to filet mignon and sea scallops. Appetizers (which they actually called "small plates") were anything from eggplant sticks to macaroni and cheese. It was just a very eclectic menu to say the least.

Anyway, I ended up ordering the potato soup as an appetizer and the filet mignon as my main meal. My husband on the other hand had a pulled pork sandwich and french fries (see...eclectic choices). The soup came out and I have had very good potato soup in the past at several different restaurants. This one, however, looked quite unappealing to say the least. It was nothing more than a reddish brown saucy consistency with a few specks of white (which ended up being some sort of cheese like a gouda I believe). It tasted about as bad as it looked. I took two spoonfuls and could eat nothing more of it.

Other appetizers which came to our table included the macaroni and cheese and the eggplant sticks. The macaroni and cheese looked delicious but it was disguised by SOOOOO many spices that it didn't remotely taste like macaroni and cheese....and I am not talking about the kind you get from a box...I am talking about macaroni and cheese made from scratch. Even my husband commented that my homemade mac and cheese is about 10 million times better than this was...hehehe The eggplant sticks had practically no taste whatsoever.

Needless to say most of the appetizers went back almost the way the came....next...main course. Mind you, we didn't eat much of our appetizers so we are quite hungry by this point. My main course arrives on a HUGE rectangular plate...literally about 10 inches long by 7 or 8 inches wide....and in the very center of the plate is this little piece of filet mignon on a round "potato cake" all set on a small bed of spinach and the rest of the plate is used for the "drizzling" of sauces...you know the deal...the restaurants that feel "presentation" is everything and minimal amounts of food for exorbitant prices are the way to go.

Nothing much they could do wrong with the filet...although the chef didn't quite get medium rare right. The potato cake didn't have much flavor and the spinach was slimy (and I typically love spinach). One of our friends that we were with also got the filet as well, another got the scallops (three relatively small scallops on top of a fish cake also drizzled with sauces) and my husband as I said got the pulled pork sandwich which was the SMALLEST sandwich I have ever seen in my life...served with french fries which were undercooked and that slimy spinach on the side.

All in all the whole experience was quite the disappointment and believe it or not, with tip, the bill came out to just over $200 (and no that wasn't mainly spent on alcohol...two of us had one mixed drink, one of us had one beer and one of us had soda). Needless to say the restaurant was WAY too pretentious for my taste and I will not be going back there again. At least I can say I gave it a shot and if anyone ever asks if I've been to Up River Cafe, I can say "Yes indeed I have and IT sucked"...hehehe

Well that's it for now....the sun is shining and it is time for me to get outside and do something productive....have a great Sunday everyone!!

Getting it Wrong AGAIN!

I truly need to learn NOT to listen to the weathermen here in Rhode Island. I don't exactly know where they got their meteorology degrees but it was obviously from somewhere that teaches how to predict the INCORRECT weather.

It's just after 10 AM and the sun is shining and it is actually getting warm. Of course we made our afternoon plans based on the fact that it was supposed to rain today. I could have been doing things around the yard today but of course it WAS supposed to rain LMAO

I'll obviously take the sunshine and warm weather over the rain but I truly wish that they could predict the weather accurately for once. So much for their so-called Doppler 10000!! Heck it could be Doppler 1,000,000 and they still wouldn't get it right!

Hopefully the weathermen where you live are better than the ones they have here in Rhode Island. Happy weekend to everyone!! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Weekends, Rain, Deer and Hosta

Well here it is the weekend again and guess what....they are predicting another weekend of rain in New England....what gives with all this rain? Doesn't the saying go "April showers bring May flowers"? Well here we are half way through May and it seems we are getting a ton of it....will it ever end or are we in a perpetual April do-loop?

So what do deer and hosta have to do with weekends and rain? Well nothing really but it's just another one of my gripes I thought I'd share...hehehe...

As you know I live in Rhode Island about a mile from the beach but the neighborhood I live in is quite heavily wooded, which means we have a lot of "forest nature" as well. A few years ago they disallowed hunting in the woods all around this area so the deer have started becoming overpopulated. Now, deer are cute and all, but my poor hosta plants are taking a HUGE beating!!

It seems that the deer absolutely LOVE to eat hosta and they have a feast in my yard!! Each year they start coming up so nice and full...looking absolutely lovely....then guess what...chomp, chomp, chomp...the deer decide to enjoy dinner night after night and before you know it all my hosta are nothing more than stubs.

We have tried everything to keep them away including this horrible smelling stuff that is made from cow's blood....it keeps the deer away for a couple of days but then inevitably they get used to it and start chomping away again. And of course you have to re-apply this stuff after each rain...LMAO Hey, see I did relate the rain to the deer and the hosta.

Oh well, have a great weekend everyone...see you on the flip side.

If you have sex with a against her will, is it considered or shoplifting?

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'... but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'? Where's that extra penny going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.

Why is 'bra' singular and 'panties' plural?

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!

If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

Whippoorwills

What is a Whippoorwill (or sometimes shown as whip-poor-will)? It's aforest bird found mainly in the Eastern US and Southeastern Canada.

So you are probably wondering why on earth I would write about a whippoorwill in my blog. Well we have lived here for almost 11 years and each spring our local whippoorwill returns to his home here in our woods.

Have any of you ever heard a whippoorwill? It is named for the sound it makes....literally. Over and over again, this bird chirps "whip-poor-will" with a strong accent on the first and third syllables and a tremolo (like a vibration) in the second. It actually sounds quite pretty at first.

One thing you need to know about this bird though...it is NOCTURNAL...yep...comes to life at night. So that pretty sound gets pretty annoying when you go to bed and are trying to sleep!! Imagine having the windows open in your bedroom letting some nice, fresh spring air in (of course after a long winter everyone enjoys letting the spring air in when it gets warm enough) and hearing this bird for hours at a time!!

Each year for 10 years now we have lived with the whippoorwill...believe it or not we have never seen it though. These birds, although predominantly heard are infrequently seen because of their nocturnal habits (it's not like we can go birdwatching in the evening). Also, their cryptic coloring keeps them very well hidden in the forests during the day.

So if any of you ever hear the sound of the whippoorwill just remember, at least you were lucky enough to not end up with one living in your backyard singing it's song EACH and EVERY night.

BTW....we also have a local woodpecker and an owl somewhere in the woods as well....hehehe....amazing that I can live that close to the nature of the forest and only be a mile away from the ocean as well LMAO

Have a great day!!

I Find it Quite Humorous

Hi Everyone,

I recently changed my profile to reflect the fact that I am currently not looking for anything here on A*F*F. I have been logging in to make bling and to participate in the Bling Nation family of groups. In addition, I restricted my email settings so that I am not receiving the exorbitant amount of emails I typically receive on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, we are unable to disable "Network Invites" so individuals are still contacting me via this method. What surprises me is that in the note they include with the invite, people are telling me that they "love my profile" and/or that "we are looking for exactly the same things". Does that mean that they are also here just to make bling and participate in Bling Nation (funny how none of these individuals seem to be members of that group hehehehehe)????? Or does it mean that they see nothing more than the photos and feel that based on those images we are the "perfect match"?

It is quite obvious that they are not reading the profile, otherwise they wouldn't make the statements that they are making. I guess it is just further proof to what I have said all along...taking the time to actually write a profile is a waste of time because people truly do not bother to read it!!

Until next time, have a great day!
