Remember When You Were 16?

So yesterday was my daughter's Sweet 16 birthday party and things went pretty well with the exception of one fight, the police showing up, and 5 of my pineapple finials missing off the porch!!!

Now it really wasnt as bad as it sounds. The police came only because there were like 40 kids in one of my neighbor's yards. The funny thing is right before he showed up, I was out front telling all the kids to get in the back yard and had sent Sail and my son on a neighborhood patrol to round them all up.

Anyways, the police officer said "Maam, you need to keep them all controlled to one area." I was like "Yes sir, I am trying to do that which is why my fiance is roaming the neighborhood now." He then went on to say "If they are drinking, they have rides right????" THIS PISSED ME OFF! WHO THE HELL WHO WOULD LET 100 and some 16 year olds drink, then drive? And who the hell who would be stupid enough on the other hand to let it happen and then have to pick up all the beer cans? NOT ME NOT ME NOT ME!!! I just kindly replied and said "THERE IS NO DRINKING, I can assure you of that. My daughter is going crazy b/c I wont stop coming out and checking on them."

He went on his merry way, but circled the house like 100 more times in his little squad car. That didnt bother me b/c he was doing his job and making sure I listened.

So I eventually got them all quieted down and then all of a sudden I hear all this commotion on the back porch and it is 2 kids fighting. I went out there quicker than a shake of a lamb's tail and said "You and You, come here with me now!!!!!" I scared the heebie jeebies out of them, but made them sit in my living room till they cooled off.

As for the pineapple finials, well I saw them on the porch table this morning so I guess they will just screw back on LOL!!!!

At my 16th birthday party, I had 300 kids show up, and my dad said "You realize these people have alcohol?" I said "Oh dad, chill out!"

Funny how things come back around, huh?

Do you remember your 16th birthday? Tell me what happened?

Off to clean up icecream cake off my deck furniture,

Well Purry, for my sweet 16th, I did the same as I had on all my other b-days. That is absolutely nothing. With my parents being farmers, and my birthday being in July, I didn't ever have parties because my parents were too busy working to take time to have kids over for a party. So 2 days after my birthday my dad invited a bunch of his friends over for his birthday and we had a bbq and fireworks. I don't suppose that counts though. My uncle John gave me a kiss and wished me happy birthday though, and dad's birthday cake had a sweet 16 plastic sign lying down beside it. That was the closest to an actual birthday party that I ever had before I left home.

Blessed Be

Kids, gotta love em, cause "ya can't live with em,& ya can't kill em". . This is coming from a veteran at getting "BIT N THA ASS", by his past. Just like the terrible 2's last until they are 4, you just might get bit a lot MORE in the future. GOOD LOOK, SWEETHEART.
Love your blog, see ya soon.

I honestly don't remember it. Nothing much must have happened.
But being born between X-mas and New Years, make your birthday kinds invisible, anyway.
Did you read the "bosses" poem?

Too depressing to talk about, but that was one Hell of a tolerant cop. Around here they would have been there with breathalizers and would have done an inspection for alcohol. Wow.

Hi Purry! I have not commented on your blog before but I read it often. I so love your stories. You know I loved my 16th birthday. I want to go back. I got a red pontiac Sunbird. LOL That was always the deal with my family. You got a not so nice first car and then at 18 they bought you a brand new one. Anyway, we were driving around, where I grew up they had a drag. I am driving along and my friends and myself hear this clunk. My tail pipe went crashing off the car. We laughed for weeks. I am still laughing. So of course we got out picked it off the street nearly burnt ourselves to death. Did we go home? Of course not we rode around with the loud rumble. LOL I could have cared less because it was amazing to actually drive, and have a car. It sounds like you did a great job controling the crowd.

My 16th birthday was most unremarkable. My parents were in the last phase of divorce, and my father's job had just moved him 400 miles away. Maybe my mother baked me a cake, I don't remember anymore. There was no party, that I do remember.

I didn't get my first car til I was almost 19, and in college.

Sweet 16? Baby,I'm Cuban. We've got Quinceaneras. I remember planning mine a year in advance, custom made dress, custom designed cakes, handmade party favors and centerpieces for the tables. The menu was traditional Cuban fare: cuban tamales, lechon, congri, and some salad. I didn't eat a damned thing! I was too busy dancing it up with my friends. The dj said he had never had so much fun at a party before. That's pretty much all I remember. I just remember the dancing, you'll have to ask my mom what else went down.

Hmmm... My 16th I spent on the beach in North Carolina - we had just moved there from Texas! Talk about a cool birthday! Didn't go out to celebrate with friends until that weekend - wasn't the first time I was hitting the beach bars as a yung'un! Didn't get my license until I was 18, so the whole car thing was out! I do, however, shudder to think what my son's 16th will be like! Thanks be, I've got a few years to dread it yet...

I worked a 12 hour day on my 16th birthday at my Dad's store. But I remember my daughter's 16th. We had a big ole party for her and there had to be 100 kids there. Most were great. One guy, starting tackle on the football team, showed up with some beer. My wife (95 lbs soaking wet) told him to leave. He refused and started to push her out of his way. Before anyone could do anything, she grabbed his arm, droped to her back, pulled him down while raising her foot into his stomach and flipped him over her head and off the porch. Now this guy was nearly 250 lbs. The next thing I knew, the rest of the guys at the party rushed over and forced the crasher to leave. The next day the football coach made him call my wife and apologize. Then he kicked him off the team for the rest of the year for drinking. My daughter had two more parties that year (New Years and school's out). The guy came to both parties and was very well behaved.

Geez, that was 30 years ago! Probably had a party or two -- one for family and one for friends.

What I DO remember, is the corsage! A "sweet 16" corsage.
It was pinned on your clothes or worn on the wrist.
White mini-carnations with baby's breath and feather/lace fern, and pink ribbon.
Most importantly -- 16 cubes of sugar!
It was beautiful!

Gee, I wonder if anyone still makes those special, milestone corsages?

So, Purry, there's a "happy" one for you!
