Unchain MaryJane!

With today being 4-20 and all I figured I would write a tribute to a very controversial herb.

When I was in high school, back in Iowa, I was fortunate enough to go to Harvest Fest. Now, bear with me because my memories of this lovely festival don't really run in any organized fashion.

My sophmore year in high school 3 friends and I headed up to Madison, WI for Harvest Fest (a festival/protest promoting the legalization of marijuana). It was a very surreal experience.

As we drove into Madison, approaching the capitol, traffic came to a stand still. I looked ahead and saw one of the coolest sights in my life. A parade of hippies as far as the eye could see. A mass of tie-dyed shirts, hemp pullovers, and pot leaf logos was moving toward the capitol building. The police were blocking off traffic so they could pass.

Once we arrived at the capitol we were surrounded by little hemp stands manned by vendors selling everything that is hemp (except the smokable kind). The blindfolded maid of justice had a sign hung over her scales that read, "Unchain MaryJane". Signs and shirts promoting the legalization of pot were everywhere. You could smell that wonderful aroma floating through the air. There was music, munchies, and the carefree dancing of those peace lovin pot smokers all around. Everyone was just enjoying the weather, the company of friends, the food, and of course sweet Ms. MaryJane herself.

It was my one and only visit to Harvest Fest. I'm not even sure they have it anymore. If they do, I'd love to go back. Whether you are a toker now or never were this is a cool event that is worth checking out. I'm sure there are events like this scattered throughout the country. Ever been to one yourself?

We're in the middle of a political, economic-driven aberration in our country. At one time in the last 100 years pot was legal and alcohol illegal. At the beginning of our country all landowners were required to grow hemp for ropes.

Not a smoker here, but I think it's absurd how much money we've wasted on this.

Never been to one of these events.
