I'm a fucking hypocrite. What a revelation!

I have a confession to make. It is something I have done for far too long. I have been around computers for about 20 years, and picked it up from the days where there weren't any cute graphics or smileys, real time chat with anyone outside your area code was economically ineffeficient, and emoticons were still beyond our grasp.

In the infancy of using the computer for communication, there was a system called the BBS. BBS's were used mostly by what we called "geeks". I would never have admitted myself to be one, mostly because my stoner friends would not only have stopped talking to me, they probably would have hit me over the head with a bong and stolen my pot money.

But I did BBS. BBSing was very similar to what you see here, what we call "blogs". Terms and abbreviations were used to save time, as all communication was done using telephone lines to connect to a central computer, and often only one person could be connected to the BBS. To prevent hogging resources, the BBS owner (or master) would set a limit for your time allowed each day. The timesaving term I am ashamed to still use was used to preface a comment to show appreciation of what the last poster might have said, or to end your own statement to deflect and ill will that might be felt at a sarcastic remark.

I still type "LOL".

Why do I do this? Oh dear God, WHY? As [post 327150] points out, it has to be one of the most annoying things anyone can do in this day and age. And yet, I still do it. I could say old habits die hard, and that may be part of it. I could say "fuck everyone else, it's what I do", and yeah, that's part of it too. But I'd be hypocritical if I said it and still hate it when others do it.

I admit it. It looks ignorant. It's like those who use an asterisk, enter some sort of body movement, then another asterisk, i.e; *hides head in shame*. And yet, I still do that too.

I want to stop. I'm ashamed of it and wish I could prevent myself from using the letters L and O and L in sequence at all times unless I am typing the words lollipop or lollygagger. There should be some support group with a mission aimed at reducing or completely refraining from using LOL. We could call it the LOLSTOPPERS or LOLSBEGONE.

So if you find yourself in the same situation as me, a subject of ridicule, surprised that people actually go out of their way to rant about something so trivial as LOL, yet still ashamed, please, find help. Now. Before it's too late.

If I promise to stop, will you still like me?

LVQTM (Laughing very quietly to myself)

Duly noted. I try not to LOL unless I really LOL'd in real life. Even some very popular bloggers are horrendously guilty on over-LOL'ing. It's just a lazy habit I think. I will try not to LOL for the next 28 days and then hopefully it will have broken that habit.

Maybe I will start an anti-LOL campaign in my new post.

A <--- Suddenly has renewed purpose in her life... to end unecessary LOL'ing and make the work a better place.

Those of us who LOL too much should be ashamed. Technology has progressed much further, we should be typing in machine code. 10100010 01001000 10100010!!!

I know. it's a bad habit. Still so much easier than typing a smiley, yet frowned upon.

Our first meeting will be at the airport Lolliday Express.

Jesus.

I LOL for the sake of it. Not!

I LOL because I really can't be arsed writing laugh out loud, but there's no way I would write that.

I do write LOL and will continue to write LOL even if the tide of popular opinion turns LOL'ing into a social disease.

what the fuck.

as if I care

LOL

see? If I laugh... I put it in.

It seems there is an all out effort to eradicate the LOL. Case in point.

Do what you do best. Stand up to the man! Give him a big ol' fuck you!

I'm just a conformist at heart, I guess.
