Breaking Points

Lambent mirrored rivers flow to the heart of this chaos
Where once only dry beds stood
Proud and steady, now carved and deep in their tracks.
You float on your butterfly wings through these torrent hallways,
Such bright colors are at odds with the cold shadows
And places where the darker things hide,
But I know that the colors bleed, just like everything else.
You flit through the world, wearing your blinders
Like a badge of honor
While looking down your nose at those too scared to remove their own.
This battle of chemical euphoria . . . is this really me?
Who am I anymore, anyway?
Do I even want to know?
Why do you linger when everything else is crumbling around us.
Come closer, please (run for your life, for god’s sake! Don’t you know what’s good for you?).
Such pretty wings will shatter, just you watch, my dear,
Leaving my hands stained with their fading colors.
And then what will you be left with?
Such potential, such promises
Stagnant and repressed . . .
The true kindness would be to crush its tiny life
Before time is allowed to kill it with kindness.
What do you want from me?!
All the lovely things turn to dust if you let them sit long enough.
Those spirits will haunt me forever,
Just like the reflections in your eyes when you used to laugh
Make is stop.
Just make it stop . . .
I can’t afford to care, anymore.
Or can I . . .
