Terrified of Sleeping...

ยง A few years ago..I was afraid to sleep at night. I would wake up frequently gasping for breath..terrified..because my breathing had stopped. I would avoid going to bed..and when I just couldn't stay awake any more..would prop myself up on pillows and fall asleep that way.

Sometimes in the mornings..on the way to work..I would fall asleep behind the steering wheel..at a traffic light..at times..even while the car was moving. I'm lucky I never had an accident. It got to a point..when I decided to seek help. I was a danger to myself..as well as others.

When I finally discussed it with my doctor..she told me I had a sever case of asthma..prescribed medication..2 different medicines..one with steroids in it. She also had me scheduled at a sleep clinic for testing.

I was required to stay overnight..with wires connected to various points of my body..that measured the times I stopped breathing during the night and brain activity.

The next day..they showed me the graph that had visually tracked my sleep-waking patterns. It was an extreme case of sleep apnea.

They prescribed a machine that I had to use every night..that included a mask to fit over my face..that forced air into my lungs to help me breath. While it did improve my quality of sleep..it also gave me the feeling of suffocating at the same time. I hated wearing that mask. So..I stopped using the machine.

Something you should know here..is that at that time..I was fat. I'm 5'2" and weighed well over 200 pounds. I decided..that I just didn't want to live like that any more.

Today..I no longer have asthma..no longer have sleep apnea...no longer take all those medications. I've lost the weight. No more fast foods..except on very rare occasions..no more dairy..again except rarely. Dairy creates mucus in the body..and causes fibroids in many women..which it did with me.

Since I changed my diet..I find I very rarely have colds..sore throats or sinus infections..all of which I suffered from several times a year..previous to the changes in diet. I've returned to the knowledge and practices of my younger days.

You've probably been hearing the reports of the growing epidemic of obesity in this country..not only with adults..but children as well. The medical profession and drug companies seem hell bent on loading us down with drugs as opposed to actually curing the chronic conditions..which are destroying us.

It's not my intention to preach. But I do want to put something on your mind. Hopefully my sharing of this experience will help you or someone you love..begin to make changes to achieve better health. I'm not completely there yet. I'm still paying for stupid habits and decisions I made in the past. But I'm getting there.

It seems you've come a Long way, Good Work. One of the raeson people are Fat is they are Lazy, an always being shown how easy it is to get it quick, be it Food, Money, the next channel on TV. But if people put in a little effort they can avoid being part of the problem and start being the Solution. Thank You

However..I'm going to disagree with you. I wasn't fat because I was lazy. I worked every day..often on my feet..in my job as manager. I was dead tired at the end of the day.

Very often..if not most times..overweight is a result of emotions. Food is often a way to provide comfort to one's self. I'm sure if you'd ask..people on this site..many have a problem with their weight. Many have tried nearly every diet there is. They don't work! It takes a change of lifestyle..and a change of how you deal with internal issues. And those efforts need the support and understanding of family and friends.

Society would do well to develop an understanding of the issue..as opposed to prejudging and stereotyping those who are overweight.

In my own battle of the bulge I came to understand that I needed to stop viewing food as entertainment. One of my favorite things to do was to get some fast food or something from the diner and gorge myself in front of the TV. Now I know not to eat when I'm tired because I tend to over-eat. I also try not to skip a meal because I will tend to snack in the afternoon. I have never seriously stuck to any specific diet. I do stay away from carbs and eat alot of salad. I also try to get to the gym as much as possible because diet alone will not do it for me If I expect to see any serious results

It is so great that you took control for yourself, by yourself and learned to rely on you instead of doctors, meds and machines. (That mask sounds horrible!) Truly inspiring Kiss. It's amazing what we can do when we set our minds to it!

This is very impressive. We keep hearing that it's possible to cure yourself like you have done, or mostly done. I think most people don't quite believe it, so it's always useful to hear from someone who has actually done it. Changing diet can be a large thing, and even fast foods and dairy are enough to end most lives decades early.

I read about an 80-something year old Chinese immigrant who lived in CA. He recently died, but his quality of life and health at the end were comparable or above most fifty-year-olds. He wrote, shortly befor his death, of a friend, who had come from China the same year he had. His friend "embraced" the traditional American diet. His last 20 or so years were filled with sickness and terrible misery. This is the case with many Chinese, the healthy man wrote.

Kissmystuff,I know this blogland is not quite UseNet, but I'm interested in hearing more about dairy and fibroids and your opinions, as well as your experience or that of friends.

Perhaps you will type that post someday soon.

These are particulary nasty because the Medical Establishment™ sure loves to "prescribe" hysterectomy for fibroids. Most women have no idea what they are getting into...

Well I have to say that a healthy diet and some regular exercise during some periods of my life changed my personality, and changed my outlook dramatically, i was positive had a spring in my step. Some other periods, where i have eaten poorly and not done any exercise. I have been downbeat, and negative. I have noticed that those periods were during stressful periods, a crap job, a relationship on the rocks. I agree our emotions impact on what we eat and if we exercise.

I try to eat healthier and to exercise, not to live a longer life, just to live a fuller life.

i am interested in hearing more about the dairy as well. i do not have much, just yougurt and skim in the coffee. i will have to do some research on it. it does seem unnatural, dairy consumption.

I loved this blog..in regards to the weight you go girl!! losing weight is one of the hardest things to do..my mother battled weight loss for years..she then found out it was a medical issue and lost some weight (she was over 300lbs at 5'10") No one else in the family had this problem and couldn't understand it...the sleep issue I really understand too..I was in a bad car accident and after coming out of comma have not been able to sleep more then 2 hours..this leaves you tiered all day..tried meication (ambien) but nothing seems to help..did the sleep study and eg while sleeping..I never go deeply into r.e.m...thats why I wake up..they say its from the brain injury..something I have to live with now..Im am so glad you are doing better now..nobody understands sleep issues unless they have them...wish me luck on solving mine...kiss...and hug for you..ps now I understand why you can't have coffee...look forward to haering ore in your blogs....

It's wonderful that you're still with us after your car accident.

When I have a problem with sleeping..there is a natural herbal remedy that I take called Valerian root. It comes in capusules..tincture..and tea form..and is available where they sell herbal supplements. There are other herbs as well that can be used to help you sleep.

Regarding AMBIEN..all drugs have side effects. The side effects of this drug are particularly disturbing. There have been an increasing number of reports of people walking in their sleep..after taking this drug. While sleeping..they've driven their cars..cooked meals..eaten..etc. Upon waking..they find the evidence..but have no memory of having done these things. Some of these activities pose a danger to the people effected by the drug..as well as others. More police are finding..that people they've stopped on suspicion of drunk driving..had not been drinking at all..but actually had ambien in their systems.

Please consider going the natural route and use the herbs instead. At least give it a try. Good luck!

color blue]bluegirl39, Passiflora incarnata is one species of Passion Flower. It's also one of the best natural sedatives.

Leaves in tea, I think, or make a tincture. Search engine time, if interested...

I grew it from seed in Northern Ohio, next to a southwest facing foundation, else it might not have made it through the winter.

I harvested lots of leaves, but did not use them, not needing a sedative. But I found the plant easy to grow and very prolific in the leaf department. If I needed a sedative, I'd sure grow this plant. Nice viney thing...
